Grim Weekend

Well that was a ****ing grim weekend.

Famine declared in Somalia; survivors fleeing to a war zone; babies left to die.
Dozens dead in a train crash in China.
Norway.
Five shot at a skating rink in Texas.
Cairo edges closer to descending back into chaos.
Amy.

I'm sure I've missed a few. No doubt any given weekend has a similar number of deaths and incidents of chaos, just seems this weekend's were more appalling than usual.

My car overheated and lost a load of coolant.

To be honest - your post is a little early. The weekend isn't over for the rest of the world. :(

Pretty dire isn't it.

Makes you grateful in many respects.

This place seems to be a safer location than many at the moment??

It's inevitable, really. We have a population of 7 billion (and 0.1% of them hold the real power and wealth) and 24-hour media pressing our noses to the window of the world.

I wish it was 1985 again. Even in Cold War times things felt more certain.

Yeah, back then we knew exactly who'd be nuking us. These days any bloody terrorist can get their hands on a dirty bomb...

I'm not, I'm certainly not drawn in, however this seems to be the only place successfully quelling any dissent.

When was the last time a bomb went off in Dubai? (that's a question, not rhetorical etc)

It wasn't too long ago the Israelis were popping off those they don't like in a Dubai hotel...

Even if one went off you wouldn't find out - things like that just aren't reported. Lots of threats in UAE are NEVER reported and there have been a few real incidents in the past in AD and Dubai.

Didn't know that - based on fact or fiction?

Nowhere is safe, I'm not stupid enough to think that but as far as the Middle East goes this doesn't seem to be a troublesome / targeted location?

The UAE pays al Qaeda to keep away (allegedly), but that wouldn't stop one random nutter at a major sporting event ...

I'm sure one day it will change when the extremists see this as a Western haven with so much debauchery.

That being said, it's been like this for a good few years now. Must be allegedly paying a lot

I was fairly depressed all of today to be honest, watching the news last night was awful.
