Greatest British Sportsperson Ever

Greatest British Sportsperson Ever
So the Telegraph has named Andy Murray as the Greatest British Sportsperson Ever via "an exhaustive search which blended the votes of almost 7,000 Telegraph subscribers with the input of our correspondents and 13 sporting experts – Ryan Giggs, Michael Vaughan, Baroness Grey-Thompson, James Cracknell and Denise Lewis among them"
The wait is over: The UK’s greatest ever sportsperson is revealed
Obvious to some - I'm a bit of a Murray fan, however - the best ever? Maybe.
Curious as to what the bored considers the best ever and maybe more importantly - why?
Plenty to chose from....

Murray's a dour miserable old get.
My vote's for Sebastian Coe. Long list of records and sporting greatness. Plus he brought the Olympics to London in 2012. Jolly nice chap I hear.

Sportsperson?
Telegraph actually used the term sportsperson?
Fuggedaboutit. He's a sportsman.

I don't know if I would call him the greatest, only because I wouldn't venture that any 1 person could be considered the greatest , but I liked Nigel Mansell for his good sportsmanship.

Steve Redgrave - amazing dedication and appears to be a nice guy, too ... no hissy fits and histrionics

Bit premature for Murray. Need some distance to assess properly. Reminds me of Diana being included in the top ten Britons of all time. Lucky to feature in the top 50 now. Redgrave gets my vote.

Seb Coe was quite great for a couple of years and loved his rivalry with Cram and Ovett but in terms of results he's dwarfed by Mo Farah in athletics.
Botham is a character, I'm not a cricket fan but surely there have been better at that sport?
Mansell is a bit like Botham, an English geezer - but Jackie Stewart, Lewis Hamilton and in terms of geezers James Hunt is surely the don
Redgrave is a good call.
Love Steve Davis, but White or Higgins for geezer, Hendry or O Sullivan for achievement?
Daley Thompson - geezer - but for multi discipline surely Jessica Ennis-Hill is up there too
What about cyclists like Hoy, Froome, Laura Kenny, Jason Kenny?
Sailors?
Other rowers?
No others?

However, snooker players ( or even darts players for that matter ) should never ever be considered as a 'sportsperson'. Its not a sport. It's a pub game.
Bobby Moore anyone? Agree Redgrave should be up there amongst the others.

Hard to pick players out of teams - look at someone like Martin Johnson or Johnny Wilkinson. Both had phenomenal careers, winning everything etc etc.
Bobby Moore - way before my era, but regarded as one of the best defenders ever, world cup winner etc etc.
Olympians, especially more recent must be up there too, both men and women.
As much as it pains me to say it because he's a ****ing weapon - Nick Faldo. He had a pretty special career both individually and as part of so many Ryder Cup teams.
In Conclusion
It shouldn't be Andy Murray.
