Good happy hour suggestions

For this weekend? Nice place (not a dive), not too loud or crowded so we can have an actual conversation, good happy hour specials, both beer/wine/cocktails. Anywhere south of the Creek is workable. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated (too tired of too many packed and loud happy hours).

All bars are.

This time is a bit different because I'm meeting an acquaintance who has difficulty hearing when it's loud. So that's why I'm ruling out the usual suspects in favour of some place a bit less crowded or noisy. But I don't want a place that's deathly either.

How crowded does EE get on, say, Friday 6ish?

No idea  but even on quiz night (when it's at its busiest, it's alright on the hearing front).

My son and his wife went to EE for brunch last Friday and stayed till about 7 ish. They really rated it and said it was the nicest Gastro Pub they've been to in DXB for ages.

EE

I wasn't aware that they accept sterling.

Re: Good happy hour suggestions

A posh bar in Dubai. What did you expect?

Seems pretty reasonable to me. You pay similar prices in many places.

FYI the Hobgoblin is 50 AED for a pint. At current exchange rates it's just above £10, not £12.

Anyway, hoping the HH specials are a bit more reasonable.

I would have suggested Sidartha in the Grosvenor, but only if you are positioned near one of their AC units - they also do sheesha if you are into that.

Great. Now my local is going to be filled with BE-ers

Millhouse, next time you're heading down there, let me know.

Sorry mate, it's not for you. It's for normal humans.

If it's your local can you confirm how crowded/noisy it gets at 6ish tonight or tomorrow?

I really want to check out EE as haven't been there yet but as mentioned, friend has hearing issues and I don't want to drag him there to find out it's thumping.

AP is only about 21 AED a pint too.

I've still yet to see EE take sterling though.

The Trap is 18AED for a beer. No one can beat that, and the pizza was nice as well. Zulu style!

To be fair, the AED35 12" pizzas are spot on, very thin and you meet loads of new black female friends when you order one. Amazing what a bit of Italian does. If you don't want them in attendance ask for extra onions and peppers..... (How do i know this?).

£10-£12 sounds a shit load more than AED50...

And I've not lived in the UK permanently since 2004!

You're not drinking enough. I've never paid for a pizza or a bowl of fruit in the trap bar.

I always used to give the fruit to the girls - I can only imagine that their diet is overweight in protein and zinc and that really they need some vitamin C.

You don't have to go there though. During happy hour Heineken is only 30.

It's a nice pub where you aren't surrounded or bothered by brass, so I'm instantly happy to pay more for those two reasons.

As I said earlier, what a total rip off!

Can you imagine what you'd get for £90 in Swansea, 17 beers a pizza, a kebab and probably a bj too.

Reminds me of a late evening on Newport Station.... Anyway.

Imagine what you can get in Cambodia for that sort of money.

HIV or a jail sentence, probably.

Swansea? Who wants to go there anyway? You're talking about drinking in some dump of a pub which doesn't compare to drinking a five star hotel in Dubai. Just not a fair comparison.

Of course, no one has to drink in a five star hotel in Dubai. There's always The York, Jockey's or Rock Bottoms. Fibber's for the slightly more discerning. ;)

isn't the pricing roughly the same across all the bars?

40-45dh/pint is really standard regardless if you're in bur dubai or downtown.

I think it varies a bit by venue. Some of the higher end ones are pricier and some places have offers, happy hours etc.

Of course, some people are just suited to the shabbier places... ;)

Well 55 AED plus 20% tax (I noticed now gone up from 16%,a new 4% municipality tax has been added) is a bit strong for a bottle of beer in AD

Not particularly whingeing, jus more surprised at their strategy (probably Egyptian management)
Fairly newish hotel trying hard to attract business, they could corner a large part of the Reem week night market if they did it right. They won't get the teachers and all that lot going there at that money.
Bar was nothing special, no draught beers, you are always gonna notice the price when the place is not memorable

A.D has never been any different bar a couple of doss houses . Still plenty value in DXB if you look about .

I see some weekend deals on especially Saturdays which are great value for money.

It's all still a captive market unless someone opens a Wetherspoons ;)

If you socialise with the right people, it doesn't really matter where you are.

This sums up so many bars, not just here but around the world. Really frustrating.
