Default French footballer 'held against his will' in Qatar

Due to the local system of sponsorship that puts employees at the mercy of their employer, French footballer Belounis is not allowed to leave Qatar because he is embroiled in a dispute over unpaid wages.

Got to say I am surprised; didn't think Qataris pull something like this on a French citizen and an international footballer, especially since they are gearing up for the WC.

That is the way employment has been in all the GCC states. You cannot leave unless your employer lets you. Is it easier now in the UAE ? Certainly in Kuwait, KSA and Qatar you need an exit visa and processing that is in the hands of your employer. If there is a dispute.........................

The decision to award Qatar the World Cup did not involve any dubious financial transactions and/or backdoor politics....*borat voice* NOT!

I thought that if sponsored you could leave any time you like but could then not return. Or is that just hogwash?

You still need an exit visa from your sponsor to get out.

In Oman, you either get a multiple entry visa or a single entry visa which is renewed annually for you to go on single annual leave. You may leave the country at any time. You may not be allowed back in though if your employer puts you on the absconding register.

Quite. As has been mentioned, it's only Saudi,Kuwait and Qatar which have such restrictive exit regulations, but the others can block your exit sometimes, usually related to financial affairs.

The irony of this is just spellbinding. I'm surprised the world's nationals haven't picked it up.

Maybe they're being "paid" not to?

Or, more likely, don't give a flying **** about an Algerian.

That's the worst part as well . The Qatari's don't see him as French , they see him as Algerian and being Algerian means he's well down the pecking order in social standing whatever his problem is .

The French won't rock the boat as they want the fighter jet deal .

Big stink all round

Exactly, and the French don't see him as French either.
