The authorities not only discouraged Alex from pressing charges, he, his family and French diplomats say; they raised the possibility of charging him with criminal homosexual activity, and neglected for weeks to inform him or his parents that one of his attackers had tested H.I.V. positive while in prison four years earlier.
“They tried to smother this story,” Alex said by phone from Switzerland, where he fled a month into his 10th-grade school year, fearing a jail term in Dubai if charged with homosexual activity. “Dubai, they say we build the highest towers, they have the best hotels. But all the news, they hide it. They don’t want the world to know that Dubai still lives in the Middle Ages.”

Good piece IG thanks for posting.
It puts Dubai in perspective.
I hope the lad gets proper justice and not just the usual couple of month / years sentence to those involved, as for the doctors and police attitude re claims that he was homosexual ..........

oh here we go again Lionheart The sadly Misunderstood...we just said that these things (boys getting raped) happened all over the world and not just here in Dubai...stop twisting things around. If you only like responses that tie in with your points of view you'll need to look elsewhere.

oh here we go again Lionheart The sadly Misunderstood...we just said that these things (boys getting raped) happened all over the world and not just here in Dubai...stop twisting things around. If you only like responses that tie in with your points of view you'll need to look elsewhere.

I think what is disgusting is the fact that they boy wasn't told that one of the attackers had HIV until a month later!! according to another site there are drugs that can be given to someone who has been in contact with someone carrying the HIV virus that can reduce the chance of them contracting it, but it has to be given ASAP after the contact has been made 
Everyone knows that journalism is censored here, the papers wouldn't even print the stitch up that DCC had to face for fear of the authorities.

Couple that with the (shhh) mass labour strike yesterday then you can see things may be about to take a turn for the worse in publicity terms.

The appalling thing about this case is that the justice system failed to punish the perpetrators. People do awful things in every society - the shameful thing is when society fails to deal properly and fairly with the victims and criminals involved.
