Fillums
Anyone seen owt decent recently?
Watched 'Drive the other day and loved it, got a very 80s feel to it. 'Tree of Life' is utterly insane, beautiful to watch and once you are done it's incredible, but still mental. Anything else worth watching? |

Re: Fillums
The Debt was excellent, but I doubt it'll be shown in cinemas in the UAE. Apparently The Devil's Double is good, but I haven't had a chance to see that yet.

Re: Fillums
Watched Storm Warning last night on OSN. Very good. But quite gruesome. Not for the fainthearted...

Re: Fillums
No Country For Old Men.
A tale of how not to get involved with what shouldn't concern you. It's a shocking, time-bomb of a movie with a brutal, almost Old Testament nerve-wracking moral feel. Not one for the faint hearted. |

Re: Fillums
Watchable TV from the Uk - Luther.... I saw a couple of episodes on Ek and got hooked...
|
Re: Fillums
Try "Fish Tank" from a couple of years ago. Gritty film set in Essex, but what a performance from the lead actress.
|
Re: Fillums
Some recommendations:
Chico and Rita - a vibrant, jazz fuelled animation depicting a tale of lost love in 1940s Cuba, brilliant. Senna - Even if the subject matter does not float your boat, it is a very well made documentary with a story that will blow you away. Source Code - an intelligent action thriller from the director of Moon, Duncan Jones, which should also be seen if you haven't yet. Monsters - amazing low budget monster movie, well worth considering. Four Lions - you won't find it in the shops... Wickedly funny with more laugh out loud moments than I've had in years. |
Re: Fillums
I thought Source Code was rather annoying and the ending was too predictable. Couldn't finish watching Four Lions as the protagonists were just too idiotic.

We Need to Talk About Kevin: great book, great film
|
Re: Fillums
Enjoyed Cat in Boots and Tin Tin.
Only end up watching kids movies these days. |
Re: Fillums
Not a film but if you haven't seen it the wire is must watch tv. Pretty much hailed by all as the best tv series ever made, gotta say I disagree thought the west wing was the best but the wire is a very close second place. Breaking bad isn't bad either
|
Re: Fillums
Four Lions as suggested is a quality watch.
Sat and watched Lock Stock over the weekend, timeless. On my list to re-watch soon are the following; Leon Taken Last King of Scotland Sexy Beast Footloose. Pick five old ones you've not seen in a while and watch again. It's blinding. Aside from that. Anyone seen Black Gold yet? Is it any good? Happy Feet 2, is that any good too? |

I'm reading another Lionel Schriver book right now, So Much for That. Again, very well written and emotionally challenging. She's a talented woman. Also, the first two series of West Wing is some of the smartest and most enjoyableTV series ever written. IMO |

Re: Fillums
Not a film but a very good dark comedy...new 3part series.
"Black Mirror" A princess has been kidnapped and the only demand is that the UK prime minister has to shag a pig live on national TV or she dies!!!Lol . New series. First of three darkly comic horror stories about the power of technology in the 21st century. Prime minister Michael Callow faces a dilemma when Princess Susannah, a much-loved member of the royal family, is kidnapped, and he and his staff struggle to deal with shifting public opinion as information about the case spreads across the internet. Written by Charlie Brooker, and starring Rory Kinnear, Lydia Wilson, Lindsay Duncan and Tom Goodman-Hill. |

But Boardwalk empire is another series by the same team behind the wire and is really well done. Devils Double is also a great movie. I watched that last week. Chris |

Re: Fillums
I loved Source Code (perfect for in-flight watching), but watched it at least three times before I fully got it all (quibble: at the end, shouldn't 'Sean' be in it, not Jake Gyllenhall's character?). It also had the superb Vera Farmiga in it, which always raises a film by a notch or three.
But better still.............. I totally recommend 'Super 8', which was directed by JJ Abrams but has "I love Spielberg" tattooed on its forehead (he produced it anyway). Set in 1979, kids making a zombie home movie (hence the title), train crash, mystery happenings, military involvement, an alien......... but all brilliantly told, and featuring an unusually superb cast of teenage actors (Elle Fanning, Dakota's baby sister, is astonishing). It will appeal to an age range of, say, 5 to 80. |

Re: Fillums
Wanted to revive this thread to offer a solid recommendation for "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" which I belatedly caught up with yesterday.
The plot is well-known now but a superb cast are all utterly riveting (Tom Hardy particularly good, Mark Strong, Benedict "Sherlock" Silly-Name, Colin Firth predictably excellent) - but Gary Oldman is just astonishing. Oldman seem to find something extra in everything he does, but if you ever wondered what 'facial acting' is, here is the masterclass. Don't expect Bond/Bourne shoot-outs and action - this is a film that actually asks you to think.............. |
Re: Fillums
Gary Oldman is apparently Mo's brother out of Eastenders :) love that Sherlock fella

I barely went out when I had those to watch... It took me four or five episodes to get hooked though. Five great films for me: Leon little Miss Sunshine Grosse Pointe Blank singing in the rain goodfellas |
