When you buy your return ticket originating in the UK; you can book your return for up to 355 days from the date of booking (on BA) - Emirates is only 340 days

On BA, you can change the return date to a future date so long as it is within one year of your original departure date (not sure on Emirates as never tried it with them). It used to cost £75 per ticket to change dates on BA (plus any difference in fare although I have never encountered any change in fare when changing dates - just the standard charge of £75/ticket).

So for example, if you book today for departing Scotland on 10th July 2013, the return can be as far ahead as 29th March 2014 (on Emirates) or 12th April 2014 (on BA). Then say in November 2013, you want to change the return flight date, you can change it to any date up to 9th July 2014 (within 1year of your original departure date) on BA.

If they want to take advantage and gouge consumers with higher pricing, they must realise that some consumers are savvy and can take advantage of lower pricing in different markets.

We didn't go to the UK every year but are beginning to want to, so this might well be worth it.

Airlines really hate you nesting tickets and often have fare rules that stop it.

Buying an A-B-A ticket and when at B, buying a B-A-B ticket 'inside' the first ticket often gets the airline's revenue management team looking carefully at you. I know of (very rare) instances where people have had their FFP miles wiped out for this.

That pisses me off, if they take advantage, why can't the customer? Bastewards.

Misers used to fly on Ariana Afghan Airlines. I suspect they may have gone out of business. There is such a thing as "TOO CHEAP".

For Jeddah and East Africa, Sudan Airlines played a similar role.

I prefer using my exective jet.

This* isn't nesting though. This is buying A-B-A tickets where A=UK and B=UAE. Instead of buying B-A-B tickets, which are often 50% more expensive.

* This being what Scamp and I are talking about.

Indeed, you can take this one step further. I actually often buy A-B_stopover_C-B_stopover_A tickets, where A=UK, B=UAE and C = somewhere I want to go on holiday, like Thailand or Sydney. For instance, a return from UK to Bangkok on Etihad, via Abu Dhabi has cost me £550 or so in the past. Thus for little more than the price of a return to Abu Dhabi, I get a holiday flight included too.

Again, though, the pain is trying to figure out all the dates in advance.

Correct.

I used my repatriation flight when I moved here for my first visit back (alright, I knew the HR director well and he did me a favour).

Since then I just book LHR-DXB-LHR

Which reminds me, my June flight needs to be changed to Xmas!

I just did exactly the same - UK, Dubai, Sydney and final leg back to UK in July 13. Cost for family of 5 was in total £2 more expensive than just buying a return between Dubai and Sydney for the 5 of us.

Sorry, meant to say LHR/LGW - doesn't seem to matter which you start / return to.
