Alternatively, turn on every light you can, plug in every electrical appliance you can, and make use of all that electricity that would otherwise not be used. Who gives a toss for the next generation? That is their problem!

You may have a point. I wonder if the grid is really able to respond fast enough and they just end up generating and dumping. Fair chance that it makes no difference... Sorry to be practical - I sort of like the idea though, just it's a bit flawed by the laws of fizzics.

Cannot wait for the floodlights and the VIP air-con at the Dubai World Cup meeting to be switched off for an hour.

Well they turned off the floodlights while the fireworks were on, does that count?

Whilst the sentiment may be laudable, most people will simply think that they have 'done their bit' by reducing consumption for a mere hour and then carry on as usual. Same as all those tiresome posts on FB along the lines of 'if you care about people with cancer/no legs/half a brain, then copy & paste this post'.

If you care about something, get off your backside or dig into your pocket and actually do something about it.

The ideal would be thorium nuke plants ,assuming research into its use is not a dead end. Just can't wait for an alternative to oil; the Gulf could use some humbling.

Saudi has always struck me as an ideal place to dump nuclear waste. After all most of the citizens couldn't get anymore toxic...
