Ear Piercing
Had a bit of an argument with the wife last night, she had our daughters ears pierced at the hospital. Young Martina is not yet 3 months old.
Wife tells me this is normal in Brazil while I am I of the opinion that 3 months is far too young. Am I right to be pissed off or am I in the wrong on this? |

Re: Ear Piercing
You should be pissed off. Your wife did it without discussing this with you.
As an (extreme) example, female circumcision is the accepted practice in certain countries. Would it be OK for you if your wife had that done to your daughter without any discussion? |

It now means you're going to have a baby with earrings...now I'm not one to judge () but babies with earrings means the parents are pikeys where I'm from. You don't seem like a pikey, or in fact Brazilian. Maybe just have a go and use a MS Word template for a permission slip or something, make the wife come and get it signed whenever she wants to do something Brazilian with the little lady? ;) |
Re: Ear Piercing
Tough one. To be honest, she probably didn't even think of the consequences or importance of the decision she made as for her is it just normal.
Let it go - but not until you have pissed in her tea. |
Re: Ear Piercing
I had my ears pierced at about 2 months old.. so I'm biased in that I don't see what the problem is. But I *can* understand where you're coming from. It's normal in some countries, I'd say it's almost like a tribal custom. Let it be. Can't really undo it now. Wife should have informed you first htough.

Re: Ear Piercing
Why wouldn't she consult you? Gotta love the firey Latinos.
On the Brazil theme I've stuck my application in for WC tickets. Matches 12, 20 & 31. Obrigado. |

Re: Ear Piercing
I guess there is bugger all I can do about it now anyway, not worth the hassle of being bothered about it. moving on.

Private victory, saves having the argument but you're happy that you've got some revenge. I actually wouldn't recommend it though. |
Re: Ear Piercing
well naturally my first reaction would have to go nuclear ofcourse, if I wasnt told beforehand
but having said that...where I am from, its perfectly natural for the women to get it done in the first few months as (and I dont know if its medically true or not) the wise ones say that it hurts the baby less as most of the nerve endings havent developed at that early stage and based on that we get the boys circumcised within the first 10 days (usually), yes I know I know how bad that sounds and trust me it looks much worse and I was cringing both times and kept on saying sorry to the poor lads all day next day but its custom, what can you do? I know there are a lot of religious discussions for it and a lot of medical discussions for and against it but I am just trying to say that I understand where you wife is coming from. When its custom from where is one from and when you grow up with everyone around you being ok with it, then it sort of becomes second nature to you I guess. Sort of like those giraffe neck ladies or the chinese small feet ladies, both horrible practices in my opinion, but that just proves my point doesnt it :D btw micro after...not before ;) |
Re: Ear Piercing
My 9 year old has asked for her ears to be pierced, I have no issue with it at all but I know it will hurt and she will end up only getting the one done. She can wait til she is in her teens then get it done if she still wants too. Personally I hate it on babies but it is a cultural thing. I would have been furious as well if I was in your shoes Brains.

errrr, how about not following a barbaric tradition based in a time of no soap and clean water, both of which trump any so called medical justification. |

12 is down beside where my wife is from. I'm in for 12, 26, 35 & 48. Also got all of the wife's family registering for tickets aswell.
Being in't South not as tropical as the rest of the country and could therefore be a bit nippy in June. I'd be surprised if my application is successful. Tickets are expensive though so that may lower demand. |

I'm heading off there in a couple weeks - 3 weeks of doing nothing and since I'm working my notice - the blackberry is staying on my desk! |

But all these customs would have been called common practice back then right? They evolved into customs, I guess. |

Re: Ear Piercing
I'd be livid! If i had a baby and if I had a husband and he took her off and had holes put in her ears at such a young age without my permission there would be hell to pay! You are absolutely right to be pissed off.
I feinted having my ears pierced, it bloody hurt, why would you do that to a baby? |

I read that they expect a similar demand to Germany in 06 / 7 applicants per ticket. However I also expect that most foreigners are going to apply for Rio / SP and Braslia (not sure offhand if Recife is hosting, if so - them aswell). Curitiba and Porto Alegre will attract Argentina and German fans I would image.
