Dubai police chied Khalfan calls Blackberry a spy tool.
Are they afraid for the safety of mafia figures and all sort of other nefarious figures residing in Dubai or are they afraid locals and expats have access to news critical of the Gulf and a means to send unflattering news out?

Wouldn't professional spies be using other more secure and discreet ways to send info out?
Can Dubai snoop on encrypted emails sent using Yahoo,Hotmail, Gmail or other free and pay service providers?
Say that Blackberry maker RIM allows the authorities to monitor all info, couldn't someone just use a 3rd party encryption software to thwart the authorities?

They need to know where you are (especially if a Mossad spy !). How do you think the police get so quickly to where you have had a car accident, when you don't really have a clue where you really are (say on a slip road on one of the Sheikh Zayed Road on-ramps) or how to give instructions.
Try this site for the UAE (or select your country) and put in your mobile phone number and it will track your location:

I thought it was a farce as well until I learned the reason for the paranoia RE blackberry: the Mumbai attacks were planned using the service. Apparantly the terrorists used it to communicate and plan movements.
This still makes the UAE look petty and silly, but that's the reason.

PS3's aren't all about playing games either.
