And it did not take time for the local media to pick it up

Dubai achieved in 10 years what New York did in 150 years while the emirate has become a safer place than London and other key western capitals, a US news website has reported.
Huffington Post, one of the most popular online news services in the West, described Dubai’s preparations to win the hosting of the 2020 Expo as “mind-blowing” and said it could be the most culturally diverse event.

Of course there are negatives here, but the writer has only been in Dubai a few weeks and had a good experience. Surely that's allowed? (I say writer, but seriously 'Ossies' - tsk!)
Dubai is far from the worst place in the world and I suspect that the reason so many go on about the inequality here is that it's very visible and cannot be avoided. If the underpaid or mistreated Indian/Pakistanis/Pinoys are in front of you it's far harder to ignore them than if they are tucked out of sight in their home countries.

bigtime +1 - I try not to be a twot about sp, grammar, punc etc as I have a life and it's irrelevant in informal situations, like forums, as long as you can be understood - but this actually hurt a little

Meh. It's here opinion, so berating her is pointless.
Dubai isn't perfect but no city is.

But you are about 30-40 times more likely to be killed in a car accident in the UAE than in the UK.
And even in the UK, with its 'high' crime levels and very safe roads, you're still about 6 times more likely to be killed in a road accident than murdered. Basically, road accidents kill far more people in all but war zones, so it's actually much more important when considering how 'safe' somewhere is than crime.
If you consider all the figures, and not just crime, Brazil comes out significantly safer than the UAE.
The journo wouldn't be the first silly tart to make glowing reports about Dubai while ignoring the inconvenient facts.

These expos are really really important. Oh yes. The world's eyes will be on Dubai like they were on.... er.... wherever the hell the last one was.

You are about twice as likely to be murdered in the UK, as in the UAE.
