I have taken a massive dip in speed. Went away at the weekend and was getting 12-13Mbps without an issue. Now come back to sub 1mbps.

Called Etisalat and off course they say there is nothing wrong whatsoever... Now the question is....

du are publishing notice that there speeds will be significantly reduced 25th to 31st July by work on the Seacom cable, would this also not affect Etisalat?

If so it would explain my issue, but leave me baffled as to why they would not bother tell the numpties at the customer care centre about it rather than let them just make up shite as they go along...

If not any other ideas where my 15 or so Mbps went?

Oh I don't watch that..but have you watched "Game of Thrones"?
It is the first book in A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of epic fantasy novels by American author George R. R. Martin. Very good series, they have just started filming series 2 based on book 2. Martin has just finished book 5 so it will be a nice long series. Although it took him about 6 years to write the 6th book.

This makes more sense to me for slow d/l speeds .

SEA-ME-WE-4 maintenance begins

SEACOM reports that it has been informed by SEA-ME-WE-4, SEACOM’s partner network through the Mediterranean, that they are planning undersea maintenance between Alexandria and Palermo.

SEACOM has been informed that this planned maintenance will take place from 25th July to 31st July 2011.

SEACOM said it is planning to provide uninterrupted service during the scheduled SEA-ME-WE-4maintenance period to our customers by routing the affected SEACOM Cable system services via the TE-North cable system, which forms part of the SEACOM network from Egypt to France. SEACOM’s network engineering team will be activating these services on a trial basis from Saturday 16th July 2011 and then fully for the period of the maintenance on the 25th July 2011. Further alternatives are currently also being planned and implemented on a customer specific basis as needed. This will ensure full availability of services throughout the planned maintenance period of SEA-ME-WE-4.

I've been wondering about that Game of Thrones series, but thought it looked a bit rubbish from a trailer I saw a long time ago. I may download the first series and check it out since you recommend. I will hold you responsible if it is crap though

Well I thought it was very good, loved Sean Penn in it. I will take responsibility if you feel it was a waste of time

Watch what you download via VPN, some providers don't care, some only care about holywood blockbusters and some hate torrents full stop. Have had all of the above so watch out.

I use one of the best paid-for VPNs (begins with W) but I never have it switched on for torrenting, it's just not necessary. The T&Cs for it do say that it shouldn't be used for illegal file sharing, and somebody at work did in fact get a warning email from them because they'd been downloading a Hollywood movie with the VPN switched on.

The reduced speeds are most likely due to the undersea cable maintenance rather than Etisalat meddling.

may well be true with the T&Cs (can always count on you for such details)....

Easy way to test the theory.

Speedtest to find out actual download vs what you expect.
Try a torrent with no VPN
Try torrent with VPN

I know for a fact that I get the 16MB as advertised, torrent with no VPN is approx 1/8th of the speed with VPN.

That's precisely what it is. We spoke to them the other day for a news story, asking them if they would be affected by the cable upgrade. Their answer was no. But when we asked if they used a different trunk cable, they answered no again.

"So you used the same trunk cable as Du, but magically, you won't be affected?"

"Yup".

****ing bullshit liers. And they wonder (and whinge) that Du gets more coverage in our magazines. Well of course they do. They actually talk to the media (and by extension, their customers), and are honest (most of the time). Etisalat on the other hand are a bunch of shysters.
