There are a lot of tricks websites use to extract data from you. However there are things you can do to minimise your foot prints including using Private Mode browsing included in Mozilla, using TOR, deleting cache regularly (i.e. every time you close your browsers), using dummy email account so they can spam away, using the google 'forgetme" process (doesn't work !!).


Ive deliberately steered clear of FaceAche for many years but recently joined (on the orders of the wife) but its amazing the algo pick up recommended friends !


I think trying to fight the onslaught of data collection is like trying to swim against the tide - I think the governments would be wary and suspicious of individuals who do not show up on traces !

How many people only get their news from FB?

I'm sure there are those. Just like there are those who only read the Guardian. I don't think either party is "better" off solely from reading the Guardian or Facebook.

We have the means to be as broadly read and informative as we want to be, if anything, we have a much broader range of news sources to follow compared to a few decades ago. But it's entirely up to you. Facebook should not be singled out as some sort of bogeyman and the current reaction to Facebook reeks more of a desperate attempt by certain parties to try to find an explanation for many people having different views from their own ordained dogma when the reality is that they just struggle to understand how anyone can have a different viewpoint. At the end of the day, is the "fake news" circulated by FB any worse than rumours overheard at the pub or whispered via lefty reddit political forums?

You’re raising a valid point here. Having spent part of my career at Reuters (not as a journalist) I learnt to value the source of news as much as the content. My kids grew up through the social media revolution and it was hard work teaching them to always check original sources rather than just reading anything at face value from various feeds.

I occasionally read the DM when I’m bored simply to find the typos, spelling and grammar mistakes along with their often highly dubious, and normally uncorroborated, sources.

Free programs like CrapCleaner and Advanced SystemCare delete cookies browsing history, internet cache and a bunch of other stuff.

Anyone else get the email from a popular middle eastern ride-sharing app about a security breach and data being stolen?

Doesn't say what really happened and it says it happened in January but I'm making a tin foil hat as we speak. It's gone too far.

This is the ME, you cant get far enough back from your 80' Plasma 3D/4D Tv for that to be effective.
