Re: Clarkson in today's ST...
fantastic! as blunt and provocative as ever. and the 'home is where your friends are' is spot on. i dare say it would be even harder still for those forced to skip the ME if they didn't have family and friends to skip 'home' to.

Well he's entitled to his opinion...even if his opinion of expats is based on working class cabbies living on the Costa Del Sewage
I think he would do well to meet the thousands of hard working professional expatriates who are far more successful than they were back home. The type who were not stupid enough to buy a house on the Jumeirah Palm, the sort that don't do friday brunches and have sex on the beach...

Having said that, no, Clarkson is not the font of all knowledge and wisom and he is certainly not meant as serious social commentary or some well-thought through sociological research - its just meant to be provocative... and because it bursts the various bubbles so many "minority groups" in society like to hide in, it is also very funny. Yeah, sure, its done to cause maximum offence to most of the precious PC-lobbies... but well, that's what makes it priceless!

But that is the essence of Clarkson - take one or two isolated / specific facts and then extrapolate from them to arrive at a whole general hypothesis on "how to live life the Clarkson way". It is not meant to be taken seriously. That piece tells us more about the author than about expats in general..
It assumes that you got more friends and family back "home"..Ye quaint olde home, that only USA is a place that will lift you as a person (odd concept really, was he a ted or summat as a kid?) and I guess he´s at an age where you really ask yourself if your endeavours was worth it.

I don't like Clarkson for a simple reason: He makes out as if he is his own man with his own opinions, but as far as cars go, he is paid by Ford to state their opinion.
