The older brother was born in Russia, and it is not helpful to pretend that political realities do not exist. The phrase being discussed is a poster writing Chechen/Russian and this to me acknowledged the difficulties of the situation (in regard to a least the older brother). It identifies his ethnicity and his political nationality. He would have presumably travelled on a Russian passport, whether he liked it or not. Even in his rejection of Russia, he himself acknowledged the reality of the situation when he said, if he could not fight for Chechnya, then he would chose USA over Russia. (It is my understanding that at the time of his death he had not yet gained American citizenship) |

Yes and no to your point. Palestinians in the occupied territories will not be travelling on Israeli passports, they will not be competing for Israel. But..Palestinian Arabs within Israel will travel on Israeli passports and do compete for Israel in International sporting events, and this is closer to an analogy. For your analogy to be correct it would be Palestinian Arabs within Israel, as Chechnya is within the Russian Federation.
