Re: Bloody Middle Eastern drivers!!
On the Bahrain - Saudi causeway speeding is a necessity unless you have a deathwish! The speed limit is 120, but I would guess average speed is more like 170 (and this is calculated including the slow lorries going 80), maybe slightly lower on the Bahraini side.
One of my colleagues was stopped by Saudi police for speeding on the causeway and given a SR50 (yes fifty) ticket....

but can you compare uk with here, no not really, in uk you would be going along country roads that have bends in it and cows and sheep etc, here mostly the roads are like motorways and so the speed is much more. here you have to contend with cars and people. also the road signs would be accurate in the uk unlike here.

I watched a few guys doing this round the back of silicon oasis one night. They basically just drive round a roundabout quickly until it tips up. Bloody clever.....although I can't condone it!

"Many drivers mistakenly believe talking on a hands-free cell phone is safer than handheld."
......surely, it's more dangerous to be holding a phone in one hand than using hands-free equipment. Yes I know that having any phone conversation is a distraction but come on!

No research will ever convince me on the veracity of this piece of wisdom...

If one hand is on the gear stick, radio or leaning on the window I think is a relatively minor detail in comparison to where your mind is. Hands only steer....your mind does everything including making the hands steer.
re: the 7 month delay on thread.....I haven't visited this place for some time...and saw this document and remembered some broad saying "well they provide hands free with cars now so it must be safe".
Hands free phone or not....the mind isn't on the job. Without the mind on the job...you may as well have no hands.

If talking on hands-free is dangerous then surely talking to any passengers you have in the car with you is just as dangerous?

Re: Bloody Middle Eastern drivers!!
However, it's been shown that, as opposed to someone talking to you on the phone, passengers generally adapt their conversation to the driver workload. people on the phone demand your thoughts regardless. Hard to explain.
As with many things in life, nothing is perfect. Some safety regs are easier to impose than others.
Banning hands free is easy (they banned hand held easy enough). Banning passengers would simply be unacceptable to society. Much like saying driving is dangerous so we should ban that.
Banning hands free will happen...and it will be accepted by society eventually.
