I like the principle--fines (and points, presumably) depending on who you cut up. If the pecking order were aligned to the sociial pecking order here, I could cut up a certain nationality all day who hog the fast-but-one-lane doing just under the speed limit. Mind you, I do anyway...

Here in Saudi, we're only just getting to grips with speed cameras all over the place. And boy, is the Traffic Department benefitting from all the fines? Yes, it is.

Black points are like the points in the UK - get 24 and you lose your licence.

Quite, would have thought that 'death by dangerous driving' would be an automatic 24pts. What's the point for speeding?

No points system here yet in KSA, just keep paying the fines and you're ok.

I got AED 1,000 and 3pts for using a handicapped space to turn around (as an alternative to a dangerous u-turn). The ticket classed my offense as parking though I honestly did not park. Quite an embarrassing fine to have to pay!

I've recently sold our car, and honestly I don't miss car ownership. Been using the metro, avoiding fines and walking more. All great things!

I checked my traffic fines yesterday for the first time in a year. 2009-10 was 5500AED (Al Ain mainly - passing on way to Muscat). I soon found out where the speed cameras are. 2010-11 is only 300AED. Bargain!
