Thanks all for the support and suggestions.
Got up at 5:45, had a lemon squeezed into a large glass of water, and went to the gym: warm up on the rower, then legs and abs. So a good start. Protein shake with a small handful of oats, some frozen strawberries and apple vinegar straight after the workout.

This sounds revolting.
Good luck. I don't follow any regimes but have found that cutting out alcohol and using stairs is enough not to put on any weight, despite loving crisps and chocolate. Such a tough plan is hard to follow, so don't be too hard on yourself if you don't follow it every single day. It should be a long term thing really, not a quick fix.

Eat clean , stay off the booze and train steady , follow the plan , interval cardio will burn the fat off .
Keep it simple the scales never lie

So what is your current weight?
Shirt size?
Trouser waist size?
And we can keep tabs on your progress or alternatively throw abuse at you

As well as this stellar advice, get yourself measured.
Even do it yourself, it's a great way to see difference;
Neck
Arms (round the bicep)
Chest
Waist
Thigh
Penis
Get them measured and recorded on a spreadsheet or something and keep measuring weekly / bi-weekly / monthly / whenever and track the changes.
Some folk like to take pictures weekly, standing straight and side on to camera. That shit doesn't interest me personally but it's another good way of keeping yourself motivated at week 5 or whatever.

Regular sex keeps me reasonably trim around the waist.

Don't get too fussed over what you eat, just train sensibly. Intervals, slow runs, go on the bike in the gym and do intervals...get the heart working.
I talk and post a lot of sh@t on here, but trust me on this topic...I do know what I'm talking about ;-)

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement.
Ok, will take measurements (well, most of them—I may have to get someone in to do the full set). Photos too, but I will spare you these until there's something decent to compare them with. My target is actually to get into 34" trousers with no overhang—if I do that all my shirts will fit: currently 38" trousers are tight. I'm not too concerned about weight per se: when I get my waist size under control, the rest will follow.
The shake tastes OK, Meow: when I first started adding vinegar I thought it was vile, but you get used to it. Vinegar's good for eliminating fat around your internal organs, allegedly.
Durham: I use the shake as a meal replacement—nutritious, clean and quick to prepare. When I go full-on next week I'll have one before my resistance workouts (3 times a week), with both honey and oats (for carbs); but CV (also 3 times a week) will be done on an empty stomach first thing in the morning (a la Commander), with a shake straight afterwards but omitting the honey and oats (although I may wait an hour or so after CV before eating—any views on this?). And I like freshly-squeezed lemon: perks you up in the morning.
Will have one day off per week, but will try to keep it to one meal rather than a whole day.

38" waist isn't that bad, depending on height. How tall are you BB?

One day of fasting isn't going to do it. It happens when your body doesn't get enough nutrition consistently over a period of time - somewhere between 3-5 days.
