She's done well, but it's amazing how far she has gone with not-very-much. It just goes to show how important other qualities are (determination, hard work, etc, blah, blah). The Barclays thing may still be her undoing though - lots more to come out of that one.

Stocks was nothing special by the way - my mum lives just down the road, I took her there once, didn't go back. Good decision of hers to move on.

I'm not going to defend it by saying it was a joke. It was a deliberate comment (albeit with a sexist joke) - I do genuinely wonder how she did it. OK, having money and some connections to start with helps, but that I do believe it wasn't all her own efforts. Maybe she didn't go the extra mile, but it does make you wonder. edit - just as if it was a man, I'd be wondering what bribes he did, or what else he organised.
