Default Accident

Has anyone seen the accident on the Dubai to Abu Dhabi road. One of my colleagues has just come in the office and said it is v v bad. There are 3 different locations, each has numerous crashes and numerous burnt out cars. Hope no one is hurt.
He said there were nearly accidents on the other side as people slowed down in the fast lane to take pictures on thier mobile phones!
I suppose people think they are invincible when they put their hazard lights on and still drive at 150kph!!

on the radio they were advising people to forget trying to get to Dubai from AD for the next few hours.

Idiots driving too quickly in fog.

I also heard it was very bad, and we cancelled a meeting as some of the attendees from Dubai couldn't get here.

Incidentally, where is the best place to get on-line news?

I just listen to the radio 1 or 2 station either online on on my mobile phone.
I don't think it will be cleared for a while. There are loadsa fire engines, police etc. I imagine it will be bloody hard work to work out whos blame it is and sort out all the insurance stuff! I'm just glad I wasn't there.

I am guessing it was more serious than that...probably multiple fatalities.

I am really worried about driving here, there have been two accidents outside my apartment this week. I have my driving test next month (in the middle of the night!) but am really not sure if I am confident enough to then take my chances on the roads of Abu Dhabi. Does anybody else feel like this?

I am also reviewing my plan to get a Super Bee...

Did you not drive in the UK prior to coming out here? As soon as I got my visa I got my UAE licence. They just transferred my UK licence.
I don't know how anyone can learn to drive out here! Even the driving instructors are crap drivers, one cut me up the other day!

Best of luck Sam! I hire a driver and drive around in a tank all the time - at least then you will be safe!

I've been driving here for over 3 years and, touch wood, no accidents to date (and i've clocked about 70,000 km in that time)....

Drive defensively, always anticipate stupidity from other drivers, leave more stopping distance than you would at home.... It's worked for me to date (i'm sure i've just cursed myself now and will have a RTC on the way home tonight)....

I totally blame the driving mentality over here. In the UK we have foggy days all the time and, of course, wet roads. People over here don't seem to adapt their driving to the conditions. They just put their hazards on (which in itself is dangerous) and think that God (sorry Allah) will protect them!
I keep wondering when I will be involved in a crash - it can only be a matter of time!

The other thing I don't get is you see kids in the back (and even sometimes the front seat!) unrestrained. Taking my child to school this morning, I saw loads of cars with kids in the back without seat belts on. If that was in Australia, those parents would be in jail.

It is illegal here, too, but it is often ignored....

Yeah, but that was in the old days when anything that did over 40mph was considered a Hot Rod...
