Re: What makes Britain Great?
Nice one Chris!
I can't say specifically because I've been away so long. However, perhaps I can say what I am returning for:
-Even if I lived behind the gasworks, I know I can catch a bus out to what for me is the most beautiful countryside in the World.
-Mist. I miss....er, mist. I notice it a lot in my live webcam spying. Miss mist!
-Pubs. I know so many have gone, and the major breweries control so many others-but they are unique to the UK.
-Birds that twitter not squawk. (For some unknown reason the Lorikeets have taken up dawn residence and the trees are not yet in fruit. I am awakened to incessant bossy squawking!)
Belonging.
.......and I love the quirkiness!!! I will arrive at my destination by 1st class rail. That much I can afford.
The blurb says this will get me 'complimentary tea or coffee....and a biscuit'.
Love it!!! How twee is that!? '...and a biscuit'! I wonder what would happen if I took more than one biscuit??
All hell would break loose: I would be thrown off a speeding train, land in a nest of false widow spiders, run screaming into an irascible violent Badger, and flee colliding with a poo tree so heavily that all the bags broke loose and burst on my head.
I am very worried about this. I won't take the biscuit. It's a trap.

Re: What makes Britain Great?
As a born Brit its great for me because I have the freedom to come & go as I please without a hassle whenever I want to.
I can be in Britain and assimilate, to smell, feel, touch & taste all that it has to offer - take it or leave it, its my choice or be on the next plane out to wherever.
I can whinge, moan & complain about all that is wrong with this that & the other, for I know the next person wont give a $hit about my going on about it for more than five seconds.
I don't need to be told its great, it can be a dogs breakfast to others for all kinds of reasons - its motherland & that's all that matters to me.

Having watched "Miranda meets Brucie" last night I must say that no matter how corny some people may think Brucie and his ilk are, they are a unique and fondly-regarded part of Britain's cultural history.

That's because it's the same worldwide, and any negatives in the UK exist everywhere else. Positives are just for the UK though.. apparently

I'm OK with one sided whinging. It can be the other person whinging, It doesn't have to be balanced & I don't have to agree or listen or debate it, I can just nod or walk away - after all thats whats great about (living in) Britain
