Riots in the UK

Erm, could we just start with some conversation?
I harbour this insane idea that a lot of what I identify as xenophobia (I'm really not trying to be inflammatory here) would be alleviated if those involved could actually converse and manage to see each other as people. Once you know someone, it's really hard to assign all those negative characterizations as a group. This is the origin, I think, of statements of the "I'm not racist, some of my best friends are (fill in the ethnicity of your choice)" etc that some people make. Once you have a conversation, the person become a human being to you and the assumptions and generalizations have to stop. Then it's possible to separate behaviour from things that have nothing whatsoever to do with it, such as melanin levels in the skin or culture of origin.

Not sure what you are referring to but in my case I was unable to get into any big convo with you cos I was on my way to work. This meant you kept coming back for a bite and getting mre argumentative. Whilst this doesn't bother me personally (Mods have thick skin
) I could see how this winds people up especially as your posts were becoming more and more inflamatory on the strength of it. This goes back again to your *perception* of what was being said as opposed to the reality of the situation
Anyways, we've exhausted this and flogged it to death mate. You do realise it's an anti climax for the people shouting "fight, fight, fight" on the sidelines

Peace be with you Sista, S'all good

There is plenty that scares the crap out out me and I'd take a small bet on my comprehensive school in Moss Side, being that bit tougher than an all girls school.

whilst I agree with some of the stuff said by you (ie LOW and Lezzachops) about prejudice etc, I think a lot of your posts were very insulting......

Riots here in the UK?........the recent events were a wee bit tame compared with past riots on the streets of England......as that which took place in England 192 years ago yesterday - on 16 August 1819.......in the centre of Manchester......the Peterloo Massacre. No half measures back then - bring in the militia to sort the buggers out. You'd be surprised how many people calling in to radio phone-ins here in the UK since last week's events said that similar methods to deal with those looters and arsonists and common criminals should have been brought into action.
You wouldn't believe just how much publicity the bloody awful, crappy luvvy lefty (Biased) British Broadcasting Corporation is giving to the pronouncements of the limp wristed spokespersons (BBC speak) of the Loony Left, to which the BBC gives far too much air time, that far too many of the judicial sentences being imposed in the courts on those found guilty of criminal offences are "too harsh, too tough!"!
Apparently the "human rights" of the thieving, looting, cop bashing, violent, yobbish, scumbag rioters are being ignored and disregarded..........effin' hell!

I don't agree with the idea that the current sentences are too harsh, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't get to hear about it, or listen to what other people may think about the issue. As for the idea that we should have deployed troops (or water cannon, or baton rounds), it's not a very "British" way of doing things. One of this country's strengths has always been the consensus policing method. Long may it continue - even in the face of the kind of provocations we saw last week.
