The trip stops in Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester, so lots of options north and south from those stations via Birmingham.

Norwich is lovely, but prices escalating. We lived in a village in between Thetford (dryest place in the UK) and Norwich. Wymondham and Attleborough offer trains to Norwich and Cambridge. Some nice cycling in Thetford forest and lots or walking too.

Re: Returning to the UK after many years
Thank you. I'm ready for a small town, as long as it has good transport options, but I'm nervous about village living. I'm a city kid (London born and bred, lived in the US mostly in New York and Chicago with a smattering of Boston). I love the country in general, but might find actual village living a bit claustrophobic and I don't want to be dependent on a car for everything, either.
It has a rail station, Megabus stop and National Express also stop there (not currently, due to travel restrictions) handy for the little Lion's home visits, and good A-roads to Norwich, Cambridge and Peterborough. Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham, Birmingham and London are all with around 2.5 to 3 hrs drive for day trips or weekends away. There's an added bonus in that it's not Norwich.

Kings Lynn doesn't have that.

Yes, been checking out both of these. Norwich is more expensive, transport in Kings Lynn sounds decent and it also appears to have some species of cultural life. No real idea of where in the country Little Lion will end up, but any of it would be more convenient that being in Chicago. Except possibly Inverness or something.

Yeah, Kings Lynn is a lot closer than Norwich to anywhere except London...Where are the major employers located that Little Lion would be looking at with the qualifications he's doing?

He has no idea. He's just completing his second year of a BEng in Civil Engineering & Construction Management. He might then want a job, or to go for a Masters to advance himself on the road to chartered status, or who knows. He's a young man, interests really only beginning to crystalise.
There's some interesting history in that town. I don't know much about it at all.
