Default Justice of the peace, or equivalent??

I have to provide certain documents to aid my husbands ILD visa application this week. Some of them have to be signed by a JP or equivalent. In Australia this was a very easy process and was free of charge. I am having probs finding out who to see and where to go for this in UK. Also how much i would be charged if anything?

Any ideas?

If a solicitor can do it you can just go to your local one, we did for some info we had to do before coming here and it costs us about 5 uk pounds each document.

Just ring up any solicitor and they should be able to help you.

p.s. sorry to hear about your job situation hope summin turns up soon for you...heres a bit of karma for you..

I found it easier to get documents signed by a JP in the UK than in Australia - solicitors will charge, but you could try your local pharmacist or your local CAB for a list of JPs in your area? I had to get a mountain of things signed before I left Scotland a few years back and kept the poor guy away from his business for about an hour!!! He didn't even have a stamp and had to write the whole jargon out by hand!! Geez I felt bad!

We used a Notary Public to sign our documents. Notaries are lawyers but if you call them up and ask if they can sign your docs as a Notary (not a solicitor) it should be cheaper. It was for us - 1.50 pound per document as opposed to 5 pound.

Your other option is to go to a magistrates court and ask the usher whether the sitting JPs do document signing. Some do some don't. Our local magistrates didn't but my friend in another county got around 40 documents signed for 8 pounds.
