I saw this on yahoo this morning and as you say its very sad but unsurprising. Without doubt he had a natural ability that few are blessed with. I always remember his victory in the Liege-Bastogne-Liege, which as you know along with the Paris-Roubaix are hardest of all classics and at times he made riding that race look easy.
