Default Electricity Cost

Having just received our latest electricity bill (almost $900 for just over a quarter ) I am hoping somebody might have some good news about the comparative cost of electricity in the UK?

I've heard it is expensive there... but surely it can't be this bad, can it?

Depends on the size of house etc, what sort of thing are you looking at?

If it helps, in our last house (a fairly small 1970's 4 bed), we paid approx. £100 a month for gas and electricity, but in this house (4500 sq ft old house with minimal insultation, all electric because not on mains gas, running an electric Aga and underfloor heating throughout) we pay £390 a month.

HTH.

Its funny we were told electricity was expensive here compared to Australia, we pay 11p a kwh and used to pay more than that in Australia. We pay £115 a month direct debit for gas and electricity and when the bill comes in we usually only have to pay a few quid or we are in credit.

I was always concerned that utility prices in the UK would be double what they are here in Toronto. Although the per Kwh is less here the monthly bills are higher due to the extreme weather conditions of +30C in the Summer & -30C in the winter

Our combined Gas & Lecky flat across 12 months for 2014 (incl tx) is ~$240/mth (£141) on top of that our water/sewage is running average $60/mth (£35) and council property taxes $420/mth (£247)

Fixed costs £423/mth - thats before we eat or do anything else

I had to look that up

http://www.ukpower.co.uk/home_energy...s#.UuOzPNIo4rg

is it possible to lower your bill from the lowest standard 'bill by the month/quarter' provider to using pre-paid meters. If so where would the savings be & why?

Or is there a combination of specific types of energy saving pre-paid meters.

On the monthly/quarterly bills are there service or other charges that would not be there on a pre-paid card meter

I'd never heard of a key meter. Or I figured it was about prepayment meters

The link didn't come back to this thread - it went to a page about obtaining a key to obtain access to a meter cabinet.

My understanding of key meters are that they are prepaid meters - the per kWh cost is likely greater, but you wouldn't be able to run up large bills without having the money to pay for it so some people use it to budget.

There are also devices you can get to monitor your electricity usage and become energy wise
