I am sooo looking forward to moving to bollington, the locals call it 'happy valley' which is also the name of the local web site for the area. It's sounds lovely and wish you all the very best for your new start in Cheshire...yes Glossop has a lot of things just on it's doorstep....and the High Street is very good. We are still renting and would settle but our sons might have a change of Uni to Crewe via MMU and my OH might be based in Warrington so we may either have lots of travel to do if we stay or move to a more convienient area....life...never easy...a bit like being a city fan....we watched the game on our laptop ...Sad or what....and as per usual we make it hard for ourselves....life is never dull though....lol

Lots of people spend too much over Christmas and need a couple months to get it all paid off, which is in time for Spring when they emerge again in time to play footie on the village green and then long summer nights sitting outside and enjoying a drink at the pub or a walk on the beach.
We send to spend more time indoors during the summer in Aus because it was just way too hot to go outside but then we use to go for a walk much later on in the evening...we knew more people who sat indoors under their air con drinking in Aus than I know here...but we did not live our life like that there....its the same here...you just have to make the most of what you can where you can......we once met a couple from the UK while we were in Penang we were all on holiday and it was late October, I asked the couple who we got very friendly with..."I bet your not looking forward to winter" their reply was "Oh we enjoy nothing more than coming home starting the fire and being cosey...it's our recharge the batteries time of the year"

It really is a small world as I use to live in Bollington before I moved to the States back in the 1980's. I owned a small 2 up 2 down stone cottage on Lord Street and had a view of White Nancy from my back bedroom window. I had an open fire in the living room and use to have open fires there in the winter after going for long walks in the surrounding countryside. I sold up before coming to the States - really had no way of holding onto it as I needed the money to make the move here. I checked out the area recently on rightmove and the house prices are out of my league now. It was definitely a friendly place back then and it's nice to hear it is still a friendly place!!

We hibernate with the A/C in summer here too, I either go out and get things done very early or very late. Winter we are out and about and the windows are open

Well after a few weeks back in the uk I am unsure if I should stay.
Things do seem crappy and all the reasons I left 5 years ago have come flooding back to me.
I have started to get setup, picked up a car, started applying for jobs, but none of those have come through yet.

I am just struggling to imagine living here again.
I just dont know what to do. I thought I would feel at home, I built it up in mind, but now I am actually here it just doesnt feel right anymore.
It has been good seeing family again, especially all my nephews and neices.

I am so confused, not sure what to do.

What were your reasons for leaving Australia in the first place? It doesn't seem like the move back to the UK was really what you wanted to do so what made you do it?

I guess its me thats changed because my home town of leicester hasnt changed much and yet it just looks a lot worse to my eyes.

Its hard to explain, the streets and houses are obviously small and more cramped looking and its been strange getting a car on the road and driving around here again. The more places I go the more crappy it seems

Its just after having seen so much incredible stuff in australia I am struggling to adjust again.
Going in country pubs that are tiny and like someones living room for a drink, when I think I could be in a massive casino instead.

I am wondering why I came back, and trying to fight the urge to jump on a plain back to aus.

Has anyone had a similiar feeling?
Just reverse culture shock that's all. Maybe try a different part of the UK? There are some very nice places to live. I am not convinced it is always a good idea to go back to where you came from anyway.

That is my neck of the woods and I wouldn't be moving back to Lancaster in a hurry. It was very run down when we went back last year, not the place I grew up in for sure. Think about work and where you need to be close to before you decide on an area.

Oh thank you for your advice.......we are going to go back in May to look at the area including Garstang,Kendal Preston. What are your thoughts about those places? we were thinking of the Uni in Lancaster for later years for our son. Also thought it would be central for my OH to travel. We use to live in Cumbria ,but that was soooo isolated. Thanks for your help

Jumping in to say Kendal, Kendal, Kendal!! Love it there

Here's an interesting comparison between Kendal and Lancaster when it comes to crime. The numbers on the left are the town you're looking at and the numbers on the right are the UK average.

http://www.upmystreet.com/local/crime-in-la9.html
http://www.upmystreet.com/local/crime-in-lancaster.html

Lancaster is still below average for the UK though, so that's a plus.

Where in Cumbria where you before?
