Default Taking Van on Ferry UK to Ireland

We are trying to hire a van in UK load up with our stuff, take ferry to Ireland drop of our stuff, take ferry back again to UK and drop off the van.

We couldn't find any van hire company who would let us pick up in UK (Hertfordshire) and drop off in Ireland (Kerry) but that's a separate point.

The van hire company we found which is allowing us to take it over to Ireland only has vans which are 2m 65cm high. Both Stenerline and Irish Ferries have a height limit off 2m 60cm, otherwise they want double price as it will have to go as to go as freight.

Will the extra 5cm make a difference? Has anyone had experience of using a van 2m 65cm on Stenerline or Irish Ferries, do they check the height or is there a ceiling below 2m 65cm?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

The ferry companies go by manufacturers specifications. What van is it?

Book the van as the 2.6 m and hope for the best, the worst thing that can happen is they demand more money from you.

If you add alll costs and it's just for transport, why not try shiply.com?

Thanks for your reply mrhappygolucky, the van is a Ford Transit Long Wheel Base.

Hire a Ford Transit long wheel base van | Van Hire | Hire Vehicles | St Albans Car And Van Hire

True we could risk it but what if they don't have space on freight side of the ferry we could be stuck without any way over to Ireland until after we are meant to be out of our UK accommodation. Bit too risky for my liking, unless someone can tell me that they have traveled with a 2.65m van before.

Thanks for your reply Moses2013. We have contacted a few shipping\removal companies, the cheapest we got was £1,600 which is still more than Ford Transit taken by ourselves even as freight. But at least we would be able to take everything that way rather than having to sell most of our furniture and travel light.

Get the smaller van thus saving you money and worry. Also making you dump some of the rubbish that you will be bringing with you - we all do it.

Shiply is different though. They are companies but a lot of the time they might have an empty van coming back, so it can be half the price.

Thanks mrhappygolucky, we may well have to do that as an option or even do two trips! A good clear out of stuff would be good.

Thanks Moses2013, tried out Shippy and indeed have received much cheaper quotes, will be messaging them soon to find out more. Many Thanks.
