Moving with a family to Galway
Hi all,
I am hoping to move to galway I'm the near future. I have an interview with the galway clinic next week!
My questions relate mainly to cost of living... I'd be grateful if anyone could help!!
1) is around €40000 enough to live with for a family of four? I have a 3 1/2 year old and 2 year old. No child care costs as my husband won't work initially. We don't have an extravagant life... Just want enough for bills, food and a few days out. Is there any families out there surviving on that sort of budget?
2) we are hoping to sell our house
here first to release some all important funds! We would hope to have in the region of €50k deposit for a house in galway. I would like to get no more than €100k mortgage.I have seen some great houses for really cheap but don't have an idea of what a reasonable
Offer is? Say a hour is on for €175k what is a reasonable starting offer?
3) is medical insurance a necessary? I'm not sure if I would get it subsidised if I got the job in the galway clinic....
4) what's a nice area for a family. We'd like to
Be more rural than town. Not on an estate really.
I think that's it for now!
Thanks 😘

1) There are people living on a lot less than 40k a yearso I wouldn't worry about that bit.
2) Look on http://www.rightmove.co.uk/overseas-...n-Ireland.html, http://www.property.ie/, http://www.myhome.ie/residential/ire...perty-for-sale and http://www.daft.ie/ for property. You will find that 50k is enough for a reasonable house in galway. Depending on what you want of course. Re what to offer.....every house is different. You could get away with offering 50% of the asking price if it has been on the market for ages and its not in great condition. If it has only just been advertised and its in pristine condition you might get told to f off even by knocking 5k off!
3) Medical insurance is a good idea as there is no nhs in Ireland. Although I heard that might be changing soon so ring this lot to get the latest http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/
4) Avoid tuam, Ballinasloe, portumna and anywhere close to them (infested with pikeys)

My missus used to babysit in Knocknacarra (sp?) and that was quite a nice area, but the houses might be a bit expensive ... we lived off Headford Road, which is quite close to the town centre, the houses there should be fairly reasonable.
Hope that helps,
Hoffage

Re: Moving with a family to Galway
Thanks for the info.
We've been planning this for a while but then I started to doubt us living on my wage!
I knew Tuam was a place to avoid but the others I didn't know!
Does anyone know what Loughrea is like? I like kinvara but it is a bit pricey. I've seen some cheap houses there that need work. But then we think it is better to be in a house that needs a bit of doing in a nicer area?! Ahhhh tough decisions.
We are going to rent first probably in oranmore and then see from there.
I'm going over next Thursday for my interview eek. Going to drive by a few areas
Hopefully if I get the job they will give subsidised medical
Thanks xx
