None that come to mind. Its no different than in Stockholm or any other
major European cities. If crime concerns you, practice some common sense
behavior. Stay out of dark lonely alleys, do not display lots of cash
around or fancy jewelry, know where you are going before you get
started, and do not buy or sell illegal drugs. If you practice those
simple bits of behavior, your chances of being a crime victim anywhere
in the United States are incredibly slim.

Tjena Jon och fru

There's 'gangs' all over the world - also in Sweden you know. Use common
sense - go where YOU want to go. The cities are big you know - you don't
walk out from the airport and straight into violence ;-)

Enjoy,
Ox

You're right about Diamond Heights, Miguel, but it's not where you say
it is. Nevertheless, I live South of Market Street but not in the
neighborhood so named. And I live West of Castro Street but not where
tourists are likely to visit. There is no part of San Francisco that I
do not go several times each year. I don't feel unsafe anywhere.

My first answer to the original question is: Stay home!
My second answer to the original quesiton is: Gary, Indiana, currently
the murder capital of the USA.
My third answer to the original question has already been stated by
many others: Crime is everywhere including the poster's home town.

This is very out of date. The upper west side, at least as far as 120th
St. Has been rejuvenated and is now lively at night, with lots of
restaurants and people walking around.

I once lived on W. 92nd Street 17 years ago and it was out of date
even then.

I've resorted to (horror!) the MUNI map and that's where they have it.

I lived on W. 103rd St. in the late 60's and it was certainly gritty
then. I've watched the area go through a complete transformation. It
certainly looks more respectable now, but I bet you can't find a cheap
apartment there anymore.

If you come to Los Angeles, spend a day in a place called Huntington
Library near Pasadena. Brig a camera. There are beautiful gardens, the
library and the art collection. The advantage of going to Los Angeles at
this time of the year is that you don't need to worry about cold weater.
It never snows here (except in the mountains surrounding the city). I
met several foreigners who visited Los Angeles and all enjoyed their
stay here. Don't worry about gangs. I lived here since 1973 and haven't
seen one yet. I was born and raised in Europe and there are places in
Europe I would rather avoid. I don't know where this nonsense about LA
gangs originate - perhaps people confuse movies with the real life. If
you decide to come here, ask for advice on where to stay. Los Angeles is
a very large city.

Thanks for some very good comments. I agree the Huntington Library is
wonderful and the "Blue Boy" (Gainsborough) is larger than life! KM

Just treat any place you visit as you would your own city, ask questions, be sensible, use your instincts but above all enjoy yourself.

I have been in many major cities all over the world, they all have beauty and they all have grey areas. I too live in Baltimore County after moving from the UK, and I can honestly say there are areas of the UK I fear far more than anything I have encountered in the USA.

The major perception in Europe is that the downtown US cities are riddled with gun waving drug pushers, statistically there are more gun crimes in the UK per head of population than in the USA.

Just enjoy and excersise caution like you would anywhere else.

I'm from Cockeysville, Hunt valley, but get over to the East on a regular basis to visit familly friends, I also thought everyone else lived in every single city but Baltimore.
