Alternative to manhattan hotels
As Manhattan can be expensive for hotel rooms,are there alternatives in New Jersey that are cheaper and still allow easy access to Manhattan?

Not that much less costly, a whole lot more hassle, and a whole lot less of
the New York experience.
I would never recommend doing this unless your time is worth absolutely zero
and you have an infinite amount of it.
You'll save, net, $5 or something a night, and spend one to three hours
commuting.
Instead, focus on discount hotel booking services, which can get you a room
in Manhattan for $80 most of the time.

What miguel said. Hotels outside of Manhattan that are convenient to Manhattan
(meaning less than 30 minutes travel time) will be as expensive as those in
Manhattan. If you are willing to travel an hour each way you can save a little
money, but probably no more than $20-$30 a day. What percentage of your total
vacation cost would this be?

What miguel said. Hotels outside of Manhattan that are convenient to Manhattan
(meaning less than 30 minutes travel time) will be as expensive as those in
Manhattan. If you are willing to travel an hour each way you can save a little
money, but probably no more than $20-$30 a day. What percentage of your total
vacation cost would this be?

And you will not have a hotel room in which to perhaps rest up a bit
between the afternoon and evening schedule. The streets of New York
can be tiring, and any sensible tourist would return to the room for a
respite so as to get a second wind.
It is nice to be able to leave your hotel and wander around in the
area you are staying in. Find a restaurant, etc. You will not really
experience the full ambience of the city staying in Jersey.

Why keep us all in mystery? What's your price range? Believe it or not,
you might find a decent room in a convenient area of Manhattan for the
price you have in mind. It is a myth that all Manhattan hotels are
outrageously priced; you can get some real bargains if you know where to

As I travel on my own and pay out of my own pocket I would say 80 dollars or less.Many people travel in two's or threes but the single traveller often finds hotels can eat up a large part of the vacation budget.If there are not big savings going over to NJ how about the other boroughs of NY? The reason I'm asking is that in many countries if you travel out from the town centre you can save,or get more for your money.I travel to the US quite often and although good deals can be found,it's always difficult in the Northeast.

The difficulty is that the Northeast US is one large city. You must get very
far from the centre city before hotel prices drop significantly, and then
you have the added cost of travel that eats up a lot of the savings. And the
value of your time. I live quite close to Manhattan, in New Jersey (8
miles). It takes me 1 1/4 hours each way to get to the city, and costs me
$15 round trip by public transportation. Hotels in my area are well over
$80. People live as much as 50 miles, and spend 2 to 3 hours each way. If
you go that far the hotel prices will be lower, but you will lose half of
each day in travel.

Forget about the other boroughs. The hotels around the airports
in Queens are not inexpensive, or if they are they are dumps that
cater to the hourly love-in trade. Also lack of public transport from
the airport hotels.
I know what you mean by single travelers paying more -- but you
should be able to find something around $100 and change --
the Habitat on 57th street for one -- and you could easily spend
$20 a day on commuting costs.
If all else fails, try a hostel. I would prefer staying in a hostel
and being in Manhattan to any hotel in New Jersey.
