Thanks for your input!

The Outpost just outside the zoo (about 400 yards from the end of the tram
line) is very good and in the evening is used by 'well to do' locals. The
owner and staff are very pleasant and helpful. The menu is quite varied and
they have menu's in various languages unlike the bigger establishment on the
opposite corner who had to translate for me before I decided that everything
was either too ricy or spicy.

Let me "piggyback" on that post - I'll be there just before Christmas.
My hotel has a restaurant, but I like to sample what's available, when I
travel.

Zurich is the Commercial Capital of Switzerland and isn't the
most interesting part of that Country. Lucerne (Luzern) is only
an hour away by train and is infinitely more interesting than
Zurich. Or go to Klosters (Graubunden) or the top of the Jungfrau
or the Schilthorn in the Berner Oberland and experience that
which Southern Californians can't even dream of (or so my friend
who lives in West Covina tells me)! Train timetables at
www.sbb.ch (English option at right of the frame).

I'm afaid have to disagree here.

Zurich is a lovely and lively city. The old town is adorable. Zurich is
fun, trendy & filled with cultural activities, which range from
traditional opera & orchestra to modern galleries and some bohemian
"stuff" mixed in. If you are there on 6 September the museaums and
galleries will be open all night. The shopping is great. There are lots
of great hangouts and restaurants.

I've read guides that insist there are over 1500 bars & restaurnts in
Zurich and that it is difficult to find a bad meal. I've never been
disappointed so far, but I haven't tried them all! If you want something
a bit wacky and thought provoking try the Blinde Kuh. You drink (or dine)
ala blind or partially sited. It's quite popular (or was all the rage not
too long ago).

Check out the ecomonist.com. They have city guides section which has a
nice overview of the city. It's tailored for the business traveler so it
might be slanted a bit towards stuff old men (just joking) but, "they"
also like Zurich (as do the people at Wallpaper, but "they" are a bit
biased). The shopping section is a sparce but apparently not everyone is
that interested in shopping... (shocking, I know!)

I like the Zughauskeller just off Bahnhofstrasse at the Paradaplatz. Good
Swiss food.

Good suggestions, I'm sure - however, the Zurich Opera is the reason for
my trip (and I'm a bit old and fragile for skiing and winter sports).
My hotel is supposed to be just across the street from the Opernhaus, so
restaurants in that general vicinity were more what I had in mind.
