Recognised by who and for what (and, of course, of which English
language)?
The new corpus-based Oxford Dictionary of English (no relation) is
better for all purposes I typically have.

That's absurd.
The most irritating thing about Mixi, I have decided, is his success
in provoking people to overreach their competence in their attempts to
contradict him.

It makes them more likely to realize that they are simply not thinking.

Re: Why do Europeans Oppose Window Screens?
Err -- I live in what could otherwise be deemed a mosquito conservation area.
We are bombarded by mosquitos and they are a SERIOUS threat to your health (west nile) and your enjoyment of the outdoors. I am in Ottawa, Ontario and depending on how close to still water you live, mosquitos can be an absolute nightmare.
Whenever I visit England, with their open doors and windows (sans screens), I am reminded of one more reason to move there... NO BUGS. What luxury! I can only dream of the freedom of having a glass of wine in the back garden during sunset. This is a fantasy for me as it is an absolute IMPOSSIBILITY in my part of Ontario.
No screens in Europe because they don't need them in many places. Paradise!

They are in Stevenson screens, a shaded and well ventilated box,
rather similar to a building well designed for hot conditions.
