why did they change the shape of luggage?

suitcases used to just that, suit shaped. You could lay a jacket in
it. more or less. Now most are a more boxy shape so that:-
a) jackets are squashed
b) its harder to walk through a doorway with two
c) worst of all, they dont fit in an average car boot
why did they do that?

My guesses, in no particular order, are:
1) Overhead bins
2) Most folks don't wear suits
3) Aisle width

probably, but a jacket doesn't have to be a suit and I cant see what's
gained in not making it jacket shaped?

Again, my cases go in the car boot and the hold.

Because they design one set of luggage and scale. Not to mention
the size stuff I see folks carrying on.

Apparently profits, but I'm guessing.

But not everyones. And there are aisles on more than just
airplanes.
By the by, they do still make "suit packs" or "suiters" as
I see them called these days. Also, a "Pullman" still tends
to be wide enough for a suit.

yes, I have a fold out suit carrier, that's why the second case needs
to be the same "thin" shape to fit in the boot.

For number 3, I would say the combination of aisles and wheels.

its nearer to square than it used to be. Lower aspect ratio if you

now I've got a new shape one I see what you are on about. If you want
to drag it by the handle it needs to not be too wide, for dragging its
more stable too. So basically, all you bloody wimps have cost me my
packing space. Pah!

Who has said anything about squares? And as far as all your luggage is
concerned, how come I don't believe you.

According to your claim about the shapes of your luggage, most people have
diffulties to believe it. Supposedly you don't care though.

Tyranny of the plurality I call it. One of the weaknesses of the
