"If you want it warm you'd have to go to the Canary Islands, or North
Africa (Egypt, Tunisia, Marocco)."

Winter is a good time to tour North Africa's cities and ancient ruins,
but it is too cold for the beaches there. Many of the cheapest hotels
will not be properly heated at night.

Spoke to a couple of Spaniards today - they say that every town
celebrates nNew Year the same way - so if you're in Cordoba, Granada
or wherever else, you'll have a good party with the locals.

I find northern Italy in winter pretty cold.
I find *Andalicia* warm enough in January if you are English,
anybody who likes it hot might prefer the Canaries.

There was snow in the hills around Granada in April, and it
was bitterly cold for a couple of days.

I have good memories of a new year (1995 or 1996 - I forget which)
spent in Barcelona. While I wouldn't describe the weather in
Barcelona in winter as warm, it's very pleasant. It should be warmer
than Bavaria and the Czech Republic, though I was in Mallorca just
before Christmas a few years ago, and for the first few days it was no
warmer than London - which admittedly was in the middle of a mild
spell at the time.. Madrid will be significantly colder because it's
inland and higher up: if you really want warm weather in Spain at New
Year you would need to go to the Canary Islands.

the hills are of course pretty high so that's to be expected, I
would recommend somewhere on the coast, assuming you regard 60F
as comfortable. People from hot places don't.

Climate
------------------------------------------------------------------
The Azores have a temperate climate all year round, practically with
no significant temperature changes.
The temperatures vary between a minimum yearly average of
14.0°C/55.2°F and 24.8°C/76.4°F (the pleasant average temperature
in August)
The sea water average temperature vary between 16.0°C/60.8°F and
22.0°C/71.6°F all over the year , under the influence of the Gulf
Stream.

Your point? Have you been to the Azores? In Dec/Jan?
The islands are damp. 13-16o and damp is cold.

"Rainfall is both regular and well distributed throughout the year with
the greater abundance during the winter months. Light cloud cover is
common throughout the year."
