Since they can't manage to get US currency in less than 4 days I really
doubt they can manage 24 hours. At least not for Bank of America. Then
again Boston doesn't have them so service there might be better.

Why limit yourself to a bank? You're in Boston. Surely you have a
Thomas Cook exchange? If you do get some there, save your receipt.
If you have any paper euros left over when you get home, they'll
convert them back to dollars at no charge (but you must show the
original receipt.)

Why limit yourself to a bank? You're in Boston. Surely you have a
Thomas Cook exchange? If you do get some there, save your receipt.
If you have any paper euros left over when you get home, they'll
convert them back to dollars at no charge (but you must show the
original receipt.)

American Express office on State Street Boston has the best rates and Euros in
Stock, Citizens Bank has Foreign money offices all over call them for the
closest, they have money "on hand"

Not sure, but I know that banks usually charge between 8 to 10% above the going
rate plus a transaction fee.

Amex is charging about 7%. Considering the obvious alternative (ATM @ 1%)
that's still a huge ripoff.

Amex is charging about 7%. Considering the obvious alternative (ATM @ 1%)
that's still a huge ripoff.

actually I'd wonder WHY you'd want to buy euros here.
the rates/fees are always ridiculous.
just get them at the atm in the airport.
heck in Schiphol there's a bank/atm IN CUSTOMS.

Myself, I get $100US in local currency in small bills from my bank and
in costs me ~$7.
Yes the rate/fees are ridiculous. But I pay the $7 for zero hassle upon
arrival. By the time I get to my hotel in Italy I would have been up
~20+hrs.
Airport ATM usually work but sometimes they don't, either it's the
system at one end or they're out of money.
I could then go to the currency exchange booth queue with everyone else
with ATM problems and then be on my way.
Or I could spend the $7 and beeline right out of Customs and straight
to the train, bus or taxi with small bills (I've gotten =8050 bills from
ATM in Italy and I've seen how ticket agents just love all the tourists
all trying to paid with large bills for a =808 ticket
. Plus I also
have some small bills for tips.
Last March in Rome the ATM I've used on other trips wouldn't work. I
walked 1 block over to the train station, 1st ATM wouldn't work but the
2nd one I found in the station did.
A week later in the Naples train station the ATM wouldn't work for me,
tried 2 others just outside the station with no luck but finally one on
the other end of the piazza excepted my card.
It was just a fluke, a string of bad luck and I had tried two different
ATM cards.
But sometimes "shit happens", I just don't want it to happen on a

Read the thread for a minute. The post requested a source in the US
because he wanted to arrive with legal currency. Depending on access
after arrival can be a problem. I once got stranded in Canada on a
holiday weekend with the ATM system communications down. Finally I
found a source for some currency but it was a mess. On a $50 or $100
purchase the additional cost is minimal. Arriving & having trouble is a
hassle.
Just last year I spent about an hour wandering Frankfurt airport before
I discovered that all the cash machines were located outside security.
It was good exercise after a long flight but it was a nuisance. I would
have preferred spending an extra $5 and having some Marks available.

(for whatever reason). In that event, one can then walk up to a
change booth and change $20/$50/whatever into local currency. Yes,
the rates will probably be terrible, but unless one has access to a
particularly good (and rare) location at home, they probably aren't
much worse than what you'd get before you leave home. So, in the
unlikely event that there is some trouble on arrival, you aren't any
worse off -- and in the normal circumstance that there is no trouble,
you are much better off.

If you haven't stumbled across an ATM (this is what usually happens
for me), why not save yourself 45 minutes of wandering and just ask?

change booth and change $20/$50/whatever into local currency. Yes,

If you haven't stumbled across an ATM (this is what usually happens
for me), why not save yourself 45 minutes of wandering and just ask?

Assuming the exchange kiosks are open, which they aren't
always.....otherwise you're buggered.

Wow! I remember being unable to make a deposit at a BankOne ATM in
Dayton because my BankOne account was with one of their Columbus
branches.
A UK ATM would both have a currency reader so that you could deposit GB
Pounds *and* would be able to dispense US Dollars in exchange? Sounds
like the banks in the UK are spending too much on their ATMs....
