The first thing I noticed getting off the plane in Naples was the smell
of burning garbage.
I have a vague memory of some notso recent newsitems concerning Naples
- a garbage collector's strike
- a local civic scandal about a garbage disposal plant either not
working or costing too much
Maybe one of our Italian friends can provide some info.
It certainly struck me that in southern Italy, the garbage situation is
much worse than other areas. Trash containers stand in the sun for weeks
without being emptied, and piles of garbage are just tipped in the
fields and burnt. Tuscany in contrast is an absolute dream of hygenic
tidyness.

I was reading an article about this just the other day in the Guardian.
There are problems about a proposed incinerator at Acerra, and it appears
that the Camorra is also making huge sums of money through "assisting" in
disposing of waste illegally.

If you think Naples is bad, you should have seen it in the 1960s!
