what town to see

I would really appreciate the groups suggestions for a must see small town.
I have 1 extra full day and night while transiting from La Spezia to Milan
airport. I'm traveling by car so I have flexibility. I will have done all
the normal Tuscan towns and would like to find one of those overlooked
Jewels off the beaten track. Hopefully this town would have accommodations
for 4. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Sorry, Ed, there just aren't any "must see" jewels, off the beaten
trail, towns that aren't crowded with visitors.
Sometimes, and I'm serious, it's fun to just select a small
town/village or so from a map and go and explore it, checking first to
make sure it isn't a "jewel".
If you want to check accomodations, then check out the Michelin site to
see some of the less expensive places in that town or area.

Genoa and the much-underrated Torino are not impossible detours (though
not small towns, either). I've heard good stuff about Rapallo, though
I don't think I've been there.

Lucca is definitely very nice, but maybe a bit larger than what the
original poster had in mind, and also I wouldn't call it undiscovered.

We have friends who live in Lodi, and although I've never seen it, it
sounds like a very nice medieval town. Another idea would be Pavia,
which I also haven't seen. There's a very famous monastery north of
Pavia, the Certosa di Pavia. Pavia however, is a small city and maybe
a bit bigger than what you had in mind.

I would suggest Castell'Arquato, a very nice medioeval hilltown on the foot
of the Appennines and different from the more famous hilltowns of Tuscany
and Umbria. From La Spezia You may drive the A15 Autostrada della Cisa
toward Parma. Near Parma drive North on the A1 then exit at Fidenza.
Castell'Arquato is about 30 km from there.

Palma, without a doubt. Generally reckoned to have one of the highest
standards of living in Italy, about thirty kilometres along the Via Emilia
northwest of Reggio It is about as comfortable a town as you could wish for.

Genova is ok,but there are some close towns like Camogli that are
really special. Most of the towns on the Ligurian coast are well worth
an afternoon.
Basically just drive to Milan via Genova and turn left when you get
sick of the traffic.

thanks very much for the tip. I took a look at your web site and very much
enjoyed your traveling in Italy photos. I was really taken by the photo of
Pedenosso, would that also be a recommendation?

It's near Bormio, and is not particularly special. Much of the region
is similarly picturesque. It's a long way out of your way though.
It's tough to know what to recommend, coz even though I have lived in
Italy on and off for a while now, I still feel like I have barely
scratched the surface. There is just too much beauty in this country
for a mere single lifetime.
I would either go along the coast, or head inland and visit Parma,
where you can have some of the most goddamn incredible prosciutto on
earth. A pleasant place that is not overrun by tourists, much like
what you say you're after.
