Not really- just shows extremes in US society. It is certainly the case
that US broadcast media tends to be more conservative wrt nudity. I
don't usually see topless women walking down the street in Manchester,
either, but the top selling newspaper in the country has them on page 3.

I wonder how extensive your travel is then? There are many nude beaches
in the US. I can't think offhand of a US beach area I was in where there
wasn't a nude beach nearby. If nude bathing is the norm in Europe well,
that's certainly news to me. As with the US, I've usually found nude
beaches either through research or by finding my way to more remote
parts of the beach area.

I disagree, with the possible exception of the British. You just see more
down south because it's warmer, and there are more people on holiday.
Non-southerners also enjoy going nude at home as well, it's just that the
weather doesn't always play along.

    > Many of the mediterannean countries where (mostly) northern

You're right there, I think.

There are a number of swimming lakes nearby and topless bathing is
perfectly normal everywhere. it's up to the person. Some do some don't.
Most have an area set-aside for nude (sun-) bathing. Some go nude on the
normal beach if there is no special nude area set aside. It's normal.
If you don#t like the look of naked top halves, then don't look. It's not
as if they come up to you and jiggle them in your face.

It's not the norm, but it's not uncommon. I suppose it depends on the
country. I've seen little topless/nude bathing in France and Italy (but I
tend to stay near the mountains). A lot in Germany and Austria.
A couple of the lakes in former West Berlin have official nude areas.
People go nude outside these areas of course, if they're busy.
Nearly every lake around here has a nude area, and evn on the banks of the
Danube in Linz it's not uncommom to see bare bums (not to mention the
Donauinsel in Vienna).

Manchester as I remember is rather cold and wet, hence clothing needed.
Page 3 photos taken in a studio.
But Americans are more extreme than Europeans. As I remember the 'Sex
in the City' troupe always wore bra's when having sex.

It still gets hot and sunny here though. Still no topless sunbathers in
Picadilly Gardens.

That would _tend_ to be my take on it too, but as with the US, Europe is
a big diverse place, and I wouldn't confuse the attitude towards topless
bathing at mediterranean resorts with all of Europe.

Well, I don't spend much of the hotter months holidaying in more
northern parts of Europe, I admit, but it's still not my general
impression. But, you live there. And, of course, you _do_ see topless
sunbathing in the UK- it's not common though on most beaches.

There's quite a bit of difference between being topless and nude though.
In this thread, I'm seeing the two things thrown about in the same
sentence. Is it normal on a non-nude beach or lakeside in your area to
see someone completely naked (man or woman) then?

I can certainly understand why nude bathing would be popular
in Europe. The warm season is hardly long enough to justify
the cost of swimwear, and the northern Europeans, in
particular, struck me as eminently practical and wisely
frugal people.

Which day will officially be summer in Scotland and the
countries surrounding the Baltic this year?

Although sitting naked on those pebble and stone beaches
must have it's dangers.

As a kid in Scotland, we would usually start going to the beach around
early June, and this could continue until the middle or sometimes even
end of August- providing it was sunny, which wasn't always guaranteed.
In Norway, I never visit beaches though they do exist in some places I'm
told, but have bathed in the Fjords there and even freshwater lakes,
which are often even warmer. It all depends what you are used to.

Summer in NL was last Sunday, the forecast for Monday actually said
that summer would finish on Monday. It didn't mention that by
Wednesday it would be winter again.

AMSTERDAM — The primary school teacher who was told to stay home a
week for
appearing in skimpy clothing in a men's magazine has admitted she
tried to
prevent the publication of new photos of herself and girlfriend
Durkje.

Ingrid — who works at the public school 't Holdersnêst in the
Friesland
village of Harkema — was the subject of feverish attention last week
when
photos of herself at an erotic fair in Utrecht were published in the
April
issue of the magazine Foxy.

Three new photos of the two women now appear in the May issue of the
magazine.

Editor-in-chief Peter Muller said the latest issue was already
printed
prior to the controversy sparked by the April

edition. He said its publication could not have been prevented.

Muller has also asked Ingrid to participate in a "glamorous" photo
shoot,
but has not received a response.

The director of the 't Holdersnêst school, Willem Wouda, revealed on
Saturday that Ingrid had been advised to stay home for a week while
the
storm raged around her.

She will remain at home until the media attention fades. "We are
assessing
the situation every day," the general director of school foundation
ROOBOL,
Joekie Blom, said on Wednesday.

Parents of the school pupils were recently informed about the photos,
but
the school has ruled out taking disciplinary action against the
teacher.

Admitting it was a very uncomfortable matter, Wouda said "as a
teacher, you
set an example, but this is of course not a hanging offence".

The photos of Ingrid and Durkje have also attracted international
attention,
with magazines and websites from Ireland, France and Germany
contacting
Foxy, the biggest sex magazine in the Netherlands.

And in Friesland, all copies of the magazine were sold out and
subscriptions
in the northern province have risen explosively, editor Muller said.

As a form of thanks for the free publicity, the magazine's editors
have
decided to take Ingrid and Durkje and their partners out to dinner.

"They've earned that," Muller said.
