Will be in Lingen, Germany (3 hours train from Amsterdam) during
February for business. Would like to travel on weekends. Want to
travel by train, but avoid any trips that require sleeping car (so
leave Friday about 3, get to destination Friday by Midnight). I have
already been to paris, london, berlin, hamburg, prague, amsterdam,
brussels, and copenhagen. want to see something else. am considering
luxemburg or cologne, but both seem sort of small and uninteresting.
on the other hand carnival will be happening in cologne. will be
travelling alone, and am in my twenties.
Suggestions?
Thanks.

Cologne is definitely not small and uninteresting and there is a student
nightlife.

Do go to Cologne or Dsseldorf during the last Carnival days between 15 and
20 February.
Do not fail to get a decent disguise.
Do not fail to take a pack of French letters with you.
Hope you still get a hotel room, it might be full!

If you're around during carnival, then Duesseldorf or Cologne have to be
the obvious choice. The big official processions are on Monday, but for
my money, Sunday is the best day with lots of small parades and action
going on in the city centres, or the Thursday 15th when the women go wild.

Have you already made arrangements for your stay? There happens to be a
very nice B&B in Osterwald, 25km from Lingen. :-)

If you go and visit carnival in Cologne, be smart enough not to make a
fool of yourself by telling those folks that you are going to visit
Dusseldorf as well.
And don't order Alt in Cologne (nor Klsch in Dusseldorf).
