Why is it that only Americans use the 'jealousy' thing? It's almost
like... you care about what Europeans think!

The grotesquely obese don't seem to be good at hygiene, for some

I'm not entirely sure I believe there was a bitching Eurotrash friend (given
the poster's nym)!
Still, removing the deliberately inflammatory "idiots" component, many
Europeans are a little mystified by the smiling thing.
When we moved to the US when I was a kid, my mother had a hard time getting
used to the "Say Cheese!" smile photo phenomenon and really made fun of it.
Every school pic immortalizes one or two kids with those frozen, forced
smiles that look like they're straining the jaw muscles (and aren't
particularly attractive!), so my brother and I really were encouraged to
look "natural" when photos were being taken and not to "say cheese." Of
course the result is that every class photo has us looking like something
out of the Addams Family.
To this day I have a really hard time sitting there with a frozen smile
staring at a camera, especially at the Dept of Motor Vehicles or waiting to
be snapped for a gym membership card! And inevitably whoever will urge me to
smile before getting it over with.

Because they had no dentists so they never heard of it before
