Dear Cyberspacenicks: If one were to choose a central and accessible site
in Norway from which to tour the country, what would that place be? Is Oslo
better than Bergen, or vice-versa? Perhaps you have other suggestions and
your sharing them with me would be greatly appreciated. Best, MR

For touring the country (whole Norway??) there is not a single ideal
stay. You will have to arrange different locations for different nights. The
distances in Norway are really long and you're not allowed to drive very
fast - AND many estimations on a rough map will prove wrong as a lot
of roads e.g. run alongside the fjords and therefore have many more bends
than you would expect without knowing the country.
Imho even the distance Bergen - Oslo is too much for a one day trip. Or
at least I'd recommend another night in between cause otherways you
just rush thru a wonderful landscape and along interesting sightseeing
points (from waterfalls to stave churches).

Voss seems the least bad solution to your hypothetical question.
Along the Oslo-Bergan train line, it is the jumping off point
for the famous Nutshell tour on one side. On the other side is
another fantastic fjord (Hardinger?) accessible by bus and ferry.
I got so darn tired of repeating the Bergan-Voss train ride once
or twice a day when being based in Bergan, I could almost justify
staying in probably somewhat dull Voss. From Voss you can see
major Norway highlights by daytrips in 4 directions.

Marc,
Norway is too big to consider any city as central and accessible. I
would recommend Trondheim as one of your base cities.

I went to a route planning site and asked for a route from Kristiansand
to Vardø. The result was 50 hours and 28 minutes drive. So the answer
to your question would be a place about 25 hours and 14 minutes from
Kristiansand, and 25 hours and 14 minutes from Vardø.
