Depends upon what your goals are. It'll be cold
in the winter. It might also be a bit cheaper. Less
crowded too. There are bits I might not wanna walk if
it was icy.

For me, late autumn or early winter after the midges have gone.
Spring is midge-free but the weather is less predictable (and
if you are going off-route up a hill there may sometimes be
avalanche hazards from March onwards).
: what bus can you get from edinburgh to the west highland way.
Go to Glasgow and then Balloch (if that's where you're starting).
I'd prefer to use the train.

Spring.
Are you doing this as college work or do you really want to know?
If college can you give me supervisors email or ask them to join
in.
If not college work if you need to ask if winter is OK then you
are not equipped to do it in winter.

last time I was on Rannoch Moor in the winter, (January), it was
blizzarding and blowing about force 8. The snow was a foot deep
on the (closed) road, not much fun for a college student without
a clue :-)

Yep!
I don't know the WHW but I do know the Moor of Rannoch in the winter (from
about 40 years ago, admittedly!).
If that's on the route, no way should beginners be up there in wild weather.

It was a beautiful day when we were in the Moor in the middle of
summer. I stood on a rock looking about when I realized that I could
see a rather long way. And I saw no sign of current human existence.
The road was there, and some abandoned buildings, but we were a long
way from anywhere. We walked a couple more hours before we reached
any particular evidence of human occupation. It's a beautiful place,
but you should know what you're doing before you go in there in
the summer. In the winter it could qualify as a real bad idea
depending
upon the weather.

The West Highland Way goes round the edge of the moor. It's certainly
bleak enough to kill you from exposure in bad weather, but it's also
popular enough that somebody will pass you carrying a thermos of hot
tea every few minutes at any time of year.

my experience of the Highlands is that when the weather gets
really bad there arent many people about. WHW is of course one of
the popular walks so maybe more people about than elsewhere, but
I wouldnt consider winter hill walking in Scotland unless
experienced. The WHW isnt of course strictly hillwalking.
