Hi Everybody,
I will be travelling from Paris to Geneva shortly, and intend to spend
a
week or so in Switzerland before leaving to Germany. Can anybody
recommend
places to go? I would like to see some of the countryside, and in
particular
do some of the scenic train trips, such as the Jungfrau peak. Perhaps
visit
a city or two as well.
Thanks,

As for "Jungfrau peak" - I hardly would call the
train up there scenic. Its a mostly underground
train up to a scenic place, Jungfrau-Joch (not
"the" peak of the mountain). More at
http://www.jungfraubahn.ch/
The scenic train I usually take when travelling
with visitors from abroad is Gornergrat - from
Zermatt up to Gornergrat with Matterhorn most
of time in view. For scenic train routes and
passes check
http://mct.sbb.ch/mct/en/reiselust/int-gaeste.htm
and especially
http://www.swisstravelsystem.ch/Scen....5.0.html?&L=2
http://www.swisstravelsystem.ch/Muse...17.0.html?&L=2
And a more complete site - but german only
http://www.alternatives-wandern.ch/bergbahnen.htm
Despite of the country's small size, there is
plenty to see and experience in a week - best
imho is to define your own priorites based on
some guide (Michelin green guide is the one
I prefer, but takes time working through ....).
Compile your list of sites, put them on the map,
check for itineraries (train or other public
transporation at www.sbb.ch - for car, motorbike
or bicycle www.viamichelin.com )
And come back if you have more specific
questions (?)
Have fun!

While above is true I think the Bernese Oberland in general is much
worth visiting. Interlaken is wonderful. To go to the Jungfrau train
one also visits Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, etc. There are many hiking
opportunities and many destinations. The Jungfraujoch observation
station would be worth the trip for many people. Of course actually
going to the peaks involves serious mountaineering. The Eigerwand is
one of the worlds greatest mountaineering challenges. Also visit
Reichenbach Falls where Sherlock Holmes defeated his archenemy Dr.
Moriarity.
Travel in this area is most effective by train (note some destinations
are only accessable by train or foot). By road bus transport is
extensive.
One might consider a Swiss Rail Pass which unlike Eurail covers most
of the variety of private Swiss railways and usually offers half price
on the few remaining.

I agree entirely that the Bernese Oberland is one of the most magnificent
areas on earth, but at the Reichenbach Falls near Meirengen the fictional
Sherlock Holmes met his death at the hand of the fictional dastardly Dr
Moriaty.

No, he didn't die. He turned up alive in London some time later.

Mistyped that -- obviously Holmes survived and Moriarity did not.

But why spoil the illusion? We are now off topic - but so what we
all agree the OP would be well rewarded to visit the area.

I'd call it scenic, you dont enter the tunnel until you reach the foot
of the Eiger glacier and even then there are three stops on the
way up at intermediate stations with large windows.
