Default Weather/clothes question

I will be visiting Paris, Belgium, the Netherlands, Berlin, Prague, Munich, and
Switzerland in that order from Sept 6 to Oct 6. I'm wondering, will it still be warm
enough to wear shorts, or can I just wear jeans/pants the whole time?

Also, what is the weather like? Is there a lot of rain during that time of year?
(hopefully it won't still be flooding by then)

We have been in most of those countries in late September and early October. The
weather was comfortably warm. In Germany, that's the season called "Golden October."
(Altweibersommer) Our friends tell us, however, that there hasn't been a summer this
year. Predicting weather there is as accurate as it is here in the U.S.

There is no hope of predicting what the weather will be like. There have been years when the weather in Europe in September has been as hot as July and August, and others where it has been as cold as November. There is a similar range of possibilities for rainfall. It could rain every day, as it has been recently, or you may see no rain at all.

Come prepared, pack layers and good light-weight waterproof. Expect to get rained on and enjoy the sun if it is warm and dry.

September it might still be shorts weather. Would surprise me if that hasn't ended
around the 15th.

October is usually the rain season. But bring some protection anyway.

Actually, it's far easier to predict the weather in the United States -- at least for
us living in the East. You can see the rains coming as they cross the US from west to
east. Europe receives most of its weather from over the Atlantic and it's very hard
to tell what's coming.

Even in the west. North atlantic weather is notoriously unpredictable.

Actually it is easy to see what is coming across the Atlantic; the key word in your comment is "most". Europe's weather becomes unpredictable when weather systems other than the North Atlantic one dominate.

Weather can come from most points of the compass across NW Europe, and it tends to be hottest in summer and coldest in winter when the weather comes from the east, across the Polish plain and northern Germany. Hot dry air can also come north from Africa, known as the "Mistral" as the wind comes north over France. Weather from the north, usually originating north of the arctic circle is, not surprisingly, cold, and generally damp, and often accompaniedby strong winds.

The key to predicting weather in Europe is knowing where the weather is going to come from next, and that key has not been found yet.

Uh, weather aside, the only people in European cities wearing shorts are probably
American tourists. My son tells of going to a soccer game in Rome when he was
studying there. It was a hot, humid day, but he and his friends were the only people
in the stadium wearing shorts.

I'm not aware that the Netherlands or Belgium have ever had shorts weather at any
time of year...

It really depends, though, on what kind of a shorts-wearer you are. If you're one of
those shorts-and-flip-flops-in-the-snow people, then by all means. Otherwise, I would
pretty confidently say you won't get much use out of them.

The weather there in summer is as warm as, if not warmer than, the UK. I lived in the UK for 35 years and there was often shorts weather (75ºF +) in the UK from May to September, and possible as early as April or as late as October.

Do you have any experience of visiting the Netherlands or Belgium? If so, please tell us about it ....... or is your "awareness" obtained from watching televison?

It's all anecdotal, but I would guesstimate that in this English city today, at least
a third of males under 20 are wearing shorts. (Usually the currently fashionable very
long ones.) It is exceptionally hot, though.

You folks tend to make me a bit worried. I'm booked to cruise from Nuremberg to
Vienna in December, and have been reassuring my sister-in-law who we're taking that
things will be settled down by then and the highs will be about 36=B0F. Am I living
in a dream world?

Also don't under estimate the need of the Italian male to look "cool" in his designer pants/ jeans even if it makes him uncomfortably hot!

It also depends what temperatures you are used to. My mother traveled from the UK to Spain one February and found the weather to be warm and pleasant, so she wore light-weight summer clothes and short sleeved shirts, while the locals were buttoned up in winter coats, wearing scarves and hats.

Don't worry, I would expect that the temperatures at that time of year in southern Germany will be 5ºC +/- 5º (41ºF +/- 9º), depending on altitude.
