Visiting Istanbul
Hi,
I plan to visit Istanbul in July 2006 on my way from Asia to Israel. We planned to go through as its one of the routes, but now we might prefer staying there a day or two (or more). Can anyone recommend good sites and hotels, we will try to plan the all trip on Google earth. Regards, Roni |

For such a short visit you hardly need to plan. There is so much to see in Istanbul you can't help but walk into two days' worth on any random itinerary. There are lots of cheapish places to stay in the Sultanahmet and Sirkeci areas. For only a couple of days, stay in Sultanahmet, it's where the grandest Ottoman monuments are. For a bit longer, Sirkeci is a better bet, as you can get onto public transport faster and be anywhere in the city very easily. Is Google Earth really a sensible tool for this? (As I only have pre-Tiger Macs here, I can't access it). If it didn't already tell you what I've written above, it's not going to be much help with additional detail. ============== j-c ====== @ ====== purr . demon . co . uk ============== Jack Campin: 11 Third St, Newtongrange EH22 4PU, Scotland | tel 0131 660 4760 <http://www.purr.demon.co.uk/jack/> for CD-ROMs and free | fax 0870 0554 975 stuff: Scottish music, food intolerance, & Mac logic fonts | mob 07800 739 557 |
Re: Visiting Istanbul
"Can anyone recommend good sites and hotels, we will try to plan the
all trip on Google earth." The absolute must-sees are the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and Aya Sofia (a church that was turned into a mosque when the Muslims took the city). I also really enjoyed the Sunken Palace Cistern, Sulimaniye Mosque, Kariye Church, and the spice market in the Egyptian Bazaar (but skip the Grand Bazaar unless you want souveniers). It would take a minimum of three days to see all of that. I liked the Side Pension (pronounced "see-deh") - as of 2001 it was US $20 per night, and is walking distance from the Blue Mosque, Aya Sofia, and Topkapi Palace. There are lots of cheap hotels and hostels in that area (do a search for "Sultanahmet hotels"). |
