Visiting Istanbul

Hi,

I plan to visit Istanbul in July 2006 on my way from Asia to Israel.

We planned to go through as its one of the routes, but now we might
prefer staying there a day or two (or more).

Can anyone recommend good sites and hotels, we will try to plan the all
trip on Google earth.

Regards,
Roni

For such a short visit you hardly need to plan. There is so much
to see in Istanbul you can't help but walk into two days' worth on
any random itinerary.

There are lots of cheapish places to stay in the Sultanahmet and
Sirkeci areas. For only a couple of days, stay in Sultanahmet,
it's where the grandest Ottoman monuments are. For a bit longer,
Sirkeci is a better bet, as you can get onto public transport
faster and be anywhere in the city very easily.

Is Google Earth really a sensible tool for this? (As I only have
pre-Tiger Macs here, I can't access it). If it didn't already tell
you what I've written above, it's not going to be much help with
additional detail.

The absolute must-sees are the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and Aya
Sofia (a church that was turned into a mosque when the Muslims took the
city). I also really enjoyed the Sunken Palace Cistern, Sulimaniye
Mosque, Kariye Church, and the spice market in the Egyptian Bazaar (but
skip the Grand Bazaar unless you want souveniers). It would take a
minimum of three days to see all of that.

I liked the Side Pension (pronounced "see-deh") - as of 2001 it was US
$20 per night, and is walking distance from the Blue Mosque, Aya Sofia,
and Topkapi Palace. There are lots of cheap hotels and hostels in that
area (do a search for "Sultanahmet hotels").

Lol explain please how you plan with Google earth...
Otherwise any hotel site will do to find good and cheap accomodation
Don't take under 3 stars
Good sites, as the man said you'll find them Ok and you won't have enough
time to see them all

This seems to becoming quite a trend. Others I've heard using Google
Earth for hotel and other recommendations were also Israelis. Must be
that high-tech herding instinct.

Hasn't hit the Mac beta yet, but it may be something you can't get rid
of?

You know what they make there? I think somebody has cut and pasted a
Tesco "food" distribution centre. Scintillating!

Yes, it has, but only for a few testers.
