I am travelling through Croatia in September and need to get to Vienna to
make our return flight home to Australia. Can anyone give me advice on the
best way to get to Vienna from Croatia. I am going about as far up as
Zadar, so anywhere from there onwards would be a big help.
Thank you.

If you are going to visit Dubrovnik you have direct flight Dubrovnik -
Vienna (very often during the week)
Hope you will have a nice time in our country

from Bratislava to Vienna it is about 60 kms
either by bus or train.

From Zadar it is possible to travel to Vienna by train, which would
kost about 99 EURO. Looking at the schedules it looks as it if possible
to leave Zadar in the morning and arrive in Vienna in the evening. But
the schedules might change between now and september, as trains are
continually improving in that part of Croatia. Check again somewhat
closer to your date of departure.
Aternatively take a bus from Zadar to Zagreb. Busses on that route run
quite frequent, but are not as confortable as the train. From Zagreb
there are two direct trains to Vienna per day, and several other
possibilities that involve a few transfers.

Skyeurope offers a bus-service for 10 EUR. Just select Vienna as your final
destination when booking your ticket.

You could also go to Rijeka by bus (there are lots of them) and get
a train from there - the scenery just north of Rijeka is nice.
Quickest (though not cheapest) would be to bus to Dubrovnik and fly,
of course. (I'd assume that anybody contemplating going anywhere
near Vienna is not interested in saving money - I think that place
ate a hole in my pocket faster than any other city I've ever been to,
even worse than London).

I doubt that going back from Zadar to Dubrovnik will be the quickest.
Zadar - Zagreb is a lot faster, and Zagreb has an airport too...

As pointed out on the other thread, flying Zadar-Bratislava with
Skyeurope and taking the shuttle bus to Vienna is not only the fastest
but also most likely the cheapest solution.

Probably. But it has a few disadvantages.
- Skyeurope doesn't fly daily on that route.
- You need to plan ahead. I doubt you'll be able to get a cheap price in
september unless you book way ahead.
One of the reason I ended upt travelling home from Croatia by train up
till now (I live in Switzerland) is that I usually plan my return trip
on the day I start my return trip. Last time I even bought my tickets on
the way...
The OP struck me as someone who just might be traveling on a relatively
loose schedule. A train ticket Zadar - Vienna costs 99 Euro, is
available up to 1 minute before departure, and valid three months. That
makes it a good alternative to me.

I guess even valid two months it is quite interesting... It allows
stopovers anywhere en route (on the route printed on the ticket).

:-) My mistake. You are correct to point out that international train
tickets are valid only two months.
But anyway, I like the flexibility train tickets offer, but sometimes
these are even not flexible enough.
When I had to travel from Split back to Switzerland a year ago I first
bought a ticket on Split - Ljublijana. This because when I set out I
hadn't yet decided it I'd travel over Italy or Austria. Wether or not
I'd make my connection in Zagreb would decide that. That conenction was
advertised at 4 minutes, I made it in 10 seconds. Just in time... Bought
the next ticket in Ljublijana, after that in Trieste, and was in
Switzerland two hours earlier than www.bahn.de thought possible :-)
