Some friends and I are planning to spend a few days in Vienna in early
December. We will arrive by train at the Westbahnhof. Is the area around the
station convenient and safe for tourists? Can anyone give us any specific
hotel recommendations thereabouts? Our hotel budget is in the 150 Euro/night
vicinity. Thanks.

It's on the edge of Vienna's centre, but the public transport there is very
good, so that doesn't really matter much. Seemed safe enough to me, although
there's always a few dodgy characters hanging around Westbahnhof.

I stayed in the Ibis Mariahilf, last time I was there. It's close by, but as
with all Ibis hotels, it's fairly plain but functional. Prices look like
they're around 50-65 Euro per night, pre-booked, at the moment.
There's quite a number of hotels in that area, IIRC. For 150/night, I don't
think you'll have too much trouble finding something.
Cheers,
Paul.

I had fantastic luck using Priceline. The Intercontinental. Worked well.
I would suggest making reservations which can be cancelled with AAA and
then rolling the dice with Priceline as the cancel limit date nears. Do
some research on biddingfortravel; at a glance I saw someone picked the IC
up for 140 USD/night at the end of October. Good luck. s

I'll second that.
All the Marriotts are also on Priceline; I got the 5*
Renaissance
http://www.marriott.com/hotels/trave...ce-wien-hotel/
for 60 euros via Priceline.com four years back.

Never felt safer than in Vienna, wandering around till late at night,
Westbahnhof area ideal for transport links, (tram system goes
everywhere nearly) and better value hotels than right in the centre
some are on the main roads so could be noisy .
Had a really good stay at www.hotelstadthalle.at in the garden
wing , the hotel is in a quite side street a few minutes walk away,
would go back any day without looking elsewhere.. Rates were
competitive
