The train connections between France and Italy in the south seem to
require changing trains at Ventimiglia. Is is practical to take a
taxi fron the station at Ventimiglia to Nice. It seems a short
distance. Do the taxis go cross border without extra fees and hassle?
what would be the expected cost for 3 people and baggage?

It's a distance of 33km and likely to be expensive, I believe the average
taxidriver is just happy for a such long trip. A guess is from 50 to 100
Euro for the trip.
There are frequent trains almost every ½ hour between Ventimiglia and Nice
so I can't see much of a reason for necessarity of a taxi. Besides there's
a nice cafeteria and restaurant in the Ventimiglia station if you happens to
be stranded for a long time.

I think I have only once changed trains at the border....it was
minimal.. just getting off one train and crossing the platform to
another. Other trips we just zipped along through; these were probably
international express trains rather than ordinary locals. will

Several years ago taxis cost 7FF per kilometer --- thus the total round trip in
kilometers times 7FF.

That would be around euro100 but in this example the fare would be based
in Italy and thus have a different rate. And is that highway or in town
rates?
Anyway, euro100-125 sounds about right to me for the 45km journey. But
since none of us seems to know the exact current kilometer rate, nor
baggage & extra fees this is only a guess-timate.

Rail distance is 33km don't think road is much longer. Anyway such long
trips are usually better negotiated rather than running on the meter. The
rail trip is about 40min and trains are running almost half.hourly so I
wonder about the necessarity of a taxi connection.

Mappy.com says 41.2 and Microsoft MapPoint says 40.5. Don't forget that
the train hugs the coast and goes straight into/out of town while the
road goes up away from the coast winding more and then goes around the
city. This does add kilometers.
I completely agree that negotiating this route is better but you have to
know what the meter price is otherwise how do you know what you are
negotiating is not a rip off?
I also agree that taking a taxi is probably unwarranted unless they are
staying outside the town. Then it could be much more convenient.

Forget it except if you really want to and are ready to pay...
There are buses and trains enough
Nice isn't very far on the map but it does take some time crossing the
border if there's a queue checking for illegal immigrants, going through
Menton and then crossing Nice.
Changing trains is much easier!

We've taken the train from Ventimiglia to Nice and there is nothing
spectacular about it. Definitely take the train and save some money and some
worrying. Have a nice trip.

Thanks for all the discussion.
My train from Rome would arrive Ventimiglia around 8:30pm. There are
only two trains after that; a night train with couchettes only (one
hour later) and a local train leaving at 11:30pm
You can see why a taxi looks attractive.
However the answers in this group on the cost make me think I can
struggle with 3 peoples luggage onto a late train. I am not sure how
to get passage on the couchette only train.
