Default Venice - side trip

We will have 2-1/2 days in Venice in late June and I wondered if there were any side
trips worth looking into other than Murano and Burano.

Is a trip to Lake Como too ambitious for one day?

We fly out of Venice so wherever we go, we have to return to Venice.

Thanks,

Cookie

2.5 days in Venice is hardly enough time to hit the highlights there -- a sidetrip to
Como is insane

If you decide you have to go to Lake Como, you'll have only 1 1/2 days in Venice.
To do properly, it's a (very) long day trip at the very least; Forget it. If you
expect to exhaust your interest in Venice after a single day, don't go there in the
first place.

If you want a side trip from Venice that gives you plenty of time to do a right
visit, without "hurrying" , I would suggest Padova. Distance is 45 km. From Venice
you take the A4 direction Milano, and exit Padova west. Things you must do!, are the
""Scrovegni Chapel" (if it's open!), the piazza dei Frutti, palazzo de la Ragione,
café Pedrocchi, the University, the Baptistery, Prato della Valle and the Santa
Antonio basilica. The Scrovegni chapel contains one of the most impressive series of
Giotto's frescos, the corpse os Santa Antonio its basilica, works from Donatello.
Centre town with its university (built before 1362) And this is one a little scratch
on the surface of Padova!

It's 30 minutes to Padua, about another 30 to Vicenza, and another 30 to Verona (also
a worthwhile visit, and a change from Venice). If you go another 30 from Verona you
could be in the area of Lake Garda--but Como would be WAY far. Another possibility is
to go another 30 minutes south through Padua to Ferrara, which is a lovely little
city, and a great place to rent a bike and see the sights (it's a big bicycling town,
from little kids to grandmas). If you'rer really ambitious, you could get a feel for
both Padua and Ferrara in one day.

If it must be a lake, why not Garda at half the distance? Or take an barge daytrip
up the river from Venice (to Stra?) which views riverside Palladian mansions
including visits.

But it boggles the mind to think how you can possibly devalue the Venice experience
on such a short trip to consider anything beyond a quick visit to Burano (not
mediocre Murano), even if you're a repeat visitor.

Lake Como is seriously out of the question. It's pretty far away - I believe about
four hours.

I'd recommend visiting one of the cities within an hour nearby - such as Padua
(Padova) or Verona, or even Vicenza. All are very interesting and have enough sites
to see for a great day trip. Padua is just a half hour away. You could even arrange
to visit two for half a day each - which is what i'd do.

I'd think that this would be your best chance to see these cities - given that
they're usually taking the back seat to the others nearby: Venice, Milan, Florence,
Bologna, etc.

True - I had posted to an earlier message but must have skipped your duration.

2 1/2 day in Venice is truly not enough time to do it justice. If you do get a little
tired of the typical sites, I'd recommend venturing out of the touristy areas - such
as out toward the Castello and the Santa Elena.

Default Venice side trip

As someone has already said there is pleanty to do/see in Venice and the surrounding area itself.

Verona is a good option if you would like to go off for a day - have a look at the article on Verona written by a friend of mine:

I am just going to agree with most of the others to reiterate what they said. I can't
believe you think you can do justice to Venice in 2 1/2 days. Even if you have been
there before. 2 1/2 days to just soak up the ambience of the place...isn't enough.

Enjoy

Heather

We go to Venice for a week just about every year, for the last twenty five years or
so. We have only left town once -- for lunch in Bologna, which we decided wasn't
worth the time. Venice is infinitely beautiful, and needs your steady and constant
and long-lasting attention. rjf

I will add that a visit to Torcello in the Venetian lagoon is a favorite for me. It
is very quiet, no shops, I believe only 1 restaurant, but very lovely. The church and
its mosaics are well worth a visit, and a quiet walk is a beautiful change of pace
from the bustle of Venice. But I could spend a month in Venice...
